Just looking for thoughts about this ...

Was out this afternoon and ended up behind an old bloke whose driving was so erratic and dangerous it was scary.
Got to the point where I called 999 and followed him till they caught us up and stopped him.
He had a right old go at me for doing it but he just didn't seem to have a clue what he had done.
Showed the copper the dash cam video i had and he said I did the right thing.
Now I'm wondering what other people would have done ....

Funny this thread should come up as I did the exact same thing (bar following them and stopping) followed an old granny in a 16 plate car for 15 miles on mostly national speed limit roads where she was driving at 25-35mph and constantly going a foot over the central line and then almost onto the grass at the other side through out, also indicating round bends in the road asif they were junctions. Not sure if she were drunk or just not fit for the road generally but it's the first time I felt the need to report some one in this manner

Good response that, when I called Durham a couple of years back for exactly the same thing they wouldn't come out even though I was following an old codger who was all over the road. I wasn't impressed

Seems a little jaded does that point of view , how would you feel if someone you know was hurt by their actions ....

Some people actually care that there's a potentially drunk, confused or just poor driver that needs checking out before they wipe someone out

I would have, and have done in the past, exactly the same thing. Only I never had a dashcam at the time.

Police as a for profit organization? Who would've thunk it?
Interesting viewpoint though, care to share how you came to this conclusion?

the reason for my opinions of the police are through various incidents with them over the years

hit and run on my car reported it all i got was an email saying were not interested in this type of thing.

neighbour got burgled wouldn't send anyone out just gave him a crime number.

my sisters garage got broken into and they stole her kids bikes my dad found them on ebay and told the police where they were the policeman wouldnt go and get them my dad had to literally threaten them with going to the press about it before the policeman decided to do his job.

my girlfriend was walking the dog in the park got threatened with a knife by some weirdo she isnt the first person hes done this to but nothing didnt even take a description. hes still there in the park all time.

other neighbour had a load of stuff stolen from a building site they charged him £100 for looking at the the cctv

    etc etc

The police don't charge for investigating criminal cases, they may however charge for supplying information to legal firms or individuals to be used in civil cases

Gone are the days that every crime can be investigated, that's the harsh reality of modern cash strapped policing, forces have to choose what to deploy resources to, priority is threat, harm, risk to people, not property.

Legal guidance from the CPS website

Regulation 110 (5) provides that the regulation is not breached where a person makes a call to the emergency services on 999 or 112 in response to a genuine emergency, where it is unsafe or impracticable for him (or the provisional licence holder) to cease driving whilst the call is made.
