I installed OS 43E and a new DSP EPROM about 6 weeks ago. I only installed this as I wanted to set the crossover at 40Hz for my pending Nautilus 800s. OS 44 should bring a number of changes check out the bryston forum at www.audiocircle.com.

As one of the first, if not the first SP1.7 owners on this forum how is your system progressing?

    Thanks gazza982. :smashin:
Do you know when the next update is due?
Also, were your updates free and were they sent from Canada?

Unfortunately gazza, my system has been boxed up for the last 4 months!!:(
Ive been doing some major home improvements and decorating and its taken a lot longer than I thought!!
I set everything up again yesterday and sat back and enjoyed!!
Pound for pound, the SP1.7 & 9B SST are still the best pieces of kit I have ever bought! :smashin:
It does such an excellent job with movies and music, as you know.
I am going to purchase a plasma and a new DVD player in the next month or so and then move upto 7.1 in the new year.
    Can't wait!!!!!!

Not sure on this one, I think it's quite a major release so we may have to wait a while.

    Yes the updates are free.

You need to order them from PMC, they are shipped from Canada. Bryston send them to PMC who forward them on, took about two weeks in my case.

It's always fun listening to your system after sometime without it.:)

Let us know which Plasma and DVD player you end up with. As far as I can remember you had a Krell CD player surely you won't be replacing that as well.:)

    Highly enough to buy one.

Unfortunately there's no one processor which is perfect, so it depends what your priorities are, which features you need, etc.

    IMO the SP1.7's strengths are:
    • Very good quality, neutral sound, especially in the front channels.
    • Superlative analogue bypass.
    Weaknesses:
    • Steering not quite as sharp in the rear channels as it is with the newer Tag or Lexicon processors.
    • No HDCD support.
    • No fun stuff on the digital side (e.g. room correction, Dolby Headphone).
    • No on-screen display or video switching (unless you buy the SPV1 add-on, which is quite pricey).
I would say it is comparable in quality to the Meridian 568.2 or the dual-SHARC Tag AV32R. I'd rate it higher than the Arcam AV8 for sound quality (but poorer for features). I've no personal experience of the Parasound Halo C2, the new Meridian G-series machine, or the Krell Showcase, but I'm sure all 3 are worthy alternatives, depending on your requirements. Lexicon MC-8 is worth checking out too.
