Just wondering..I'm in a similr situation to a few of the dudes on this forum in that I am moving into a home that is no longer floorstander friendly & consequently have had to consider the sub sat route...here's what I've been thinking...the likes of the KEF eggs which seem to be the reluctant choice considering the price v performance quandry...how would a set up comprising of say for argument Kef Coda 7's (or newer/similar) X 5 & a sub compare...what I mean is how would 5 smallish bookshelf speakers (shielded of course) with a sub in tow compare to an actual sub/sat system..am I gibbering or is this a viable option (I realise that I would potentially have 1 spare speaker - but this could prove useful for those of a 6.1 bent)...any opinions welcome

    cheers

    Berth:)

What you suggest should work fine. Use the amp's bass management to send <80Hz to the sub and >80Hz to the "bookshelf" speakers and you're away.

Most certainly a good idea and will give you better sound than the eggs.

Set the bass management as Liam has suggested and your in business.

I have just put my Def Tech sub sat system up for sale as I wished to return to the full range speaker plus sub option. The difference depends on the quality of the speakers that you use.

And this is exactly the route I am taking - replacing my Monitor Audio floorstanders with M&K S85 and probably a REL Q100E or Paradigm Servo15 sub. :D

    Cheers,
    Liam

thanks all for the feedback I think you've just made my mind up for me - I'm not going to go down the 'official' sub/sat route I think I'll look at the M&K (etc) option...

    cheers for now

will let you know what I go for in the end..

This is not the option that was being discussed. While the Sony Dav range are alright as a lifestyle product, the sound quality is no where near good enough for serious HC. The suggestion to use small bookshelf speakers and a quality subwoofer is the way to go. Try some Kef Crestas and a rel 100e, or B&W 600 series with a rel sub.
