The UK Government has agreed to pay £12million to fund "new fences" and "extra security" at the French port:
BBC News - UK pledges £12m to help Calais tackle illegal migrants
Appreciate the figure being paid is tiny but are there any opinions on this? I am all for stopping illegal immigration but I'm not sure why we have to fund improvements - and employment - in a French port. Surely their border controls should be sufficiently rigorous without relying on third party funding?
We could, of course, always fund Calais improvements if it were returned to England after its illegal seizure in 1558.
