I recall reading how the old DAC magic had the cleanest signal path on the XLR out, with the RCA output passing thru an extra OpAmp or something.

Is this still true of the Stream Magic, CXN and 851N?

I have tried googling it; if anyone has a link to teardown pics or some writeup please post.

    I own the cxn.
I emailed Cambridge on that subject.
    They informed that
The cxn and cxa 80 is internally balanced through xlr.
They said the balance is from the dac straight through.

    Which is quite rare.
    So yes fully balanced

Thanks terry. For the record, I always use the balanced outs on my SM6 and 851N. I did a brief test with the RCA outs on the latter and had to switch it back immediately due to an apparent midrange glare.
