    Awesome! :smashin:

What good news indeed and well done to C4 for making the move!!

I know ITV are planning HD but for a channel that was only 1 of 3 back in the day you would of thought ITV would of made the move sooner.

    Big Brother HD!! :D

Well done channel 4,this is the first UK full time terrestrial channel to be available in HD on satelite. Now all we need is BBC to go "full time"with their HD channel rather than the 2-4 hrs a day we get now.

Things are starting to look up for HD, and when ITV go live next year that will only mean channel 5 should not be to far behind before they lauch aswell.

At this rate we shall be able to give Sky the boot and save ourselves a few quid a month.I assume a HD PVR will be lauched early next year and even though I have only recently bought into SKY HD I dare say I shall be getting one of those boxes as soon as my 12 month deal with sky comes to an end.

    Whilst I absolutely welcome a new HD channel this year, I'm a little confused by this statement;

"Channel 4 will be the first terrestrial broadcaster to offer a full-time high definition simulcast of its main service on Sky."

This seems unlikely to me as I believe, at first, this will be like the Sky One HD channel (amongst others) where not every programme is broadcast in HD.

Anyway, on a less serious tangent, my missus currently watches Hollyoaks on a Sunday morning while I do something (anything) else.

Might have to catch 30 mins or so if it's in HD .....

It absolutely will be like SKY One. They said "...will carry high definition versions of the channel's programming where available."

Personally I dont care, but then I dont care about the SKY One simulcast situation either.

No doubt there will be plenty of moaners who will voice their opinions will ignoring the fact that even if the majority of content is upscaled SD, the new HD material is HD we didnt have prior to the channels launch.

That's great news. Glad I got a 500GB disk!

I wonder how they will handle 4:3 broadcasts. Sky zoom in - halfway between 4:3 and widescreen - so leaving smaller black bars on the left and right - maintaining aspect ratio and helping to fill the screen.

Still not sure if I like it - especially with The Simpsons. Zooming in on a SD recording (therefore loosing info) and then upscaling to 1080 seems wrong!

Also, I can't get used to HDMI's lack of widescreen switching.

    Regards

    Simon

Well spotted, must have missed that bit.

Like Sky One HD this will change over time though with more and more content available in HD.

Perhaps they will change their scheduling of Channel 4 & 4 HD to suit?

delighted with the news, even if it is a mix and match of HD and Non HD stuff at the beginning like Sky 1, better than nothing.

So will this be Free-to-View like BBC HD, for all of us with a SKY HD Box but no SKY subscription?

The lack of HDMI widescreen switching has nothing to do with HDMI but rather your TV. My TV switches aspect ratios on an HDMI source with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

    Yes, it should be.

This might even force Sky into reducing the price of the HD subscription as a lot of people will be more than happy to have just BBC HD and C4 HD for free.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm big Brother in High Def,,, god help us :D:D

Well it's good they have taken this route like some others not to keen on paying the tenner a month for the subscrition so should have BBC HD,, Channel 4 HD and ITV HD next year and possibly Eurosport HD ??? As I don't subscribe to the sports package but get Eurosport for free which would be a reasonable choice of HD channels to watch.

Just a shame ITV didn't have HD yet to watch the rugby :(:(:(

The BBC HD channel is FTA (Free To Air) and at this time CH4 HD will be FTV (Free To View and needs a smartcard) as it would still be covered by the current encryption contract between SKY and CH4 plus CH4 may not currently have the FTA rights package in place.

I don't much when it comes to the technology about signals and HD etc but the PQ on the Channel5 tv stations i.e. 5 US etc appears to be amazing on SD I assume that there network is superior to ITV etc,, as some PQ on ITV is shocking the rugby for example is terrible wish channel 5 had some more sporting events on there but they do have some good evening programmes which look awesome and if they go HD soon would be a very good station indeed to watch.

"However, at launch Channel 4 will only produce and transmit a "proportion" of programmes on its schedule in HD, with future plans to increase investment on programming in this format.
Channel 4's new HD simulcast will initially be available to digital satellite subscribers to Sky HD. There are plans to make it available on digital cable TV and Freeview in the future."
