Should i get the region 1 version now or wait for the region 2 my gut says region 1.I cannot imagine that the region 2 version will be better than the region 1 disc, but i could be wrong.

R1 is RCE which may or may not cause you problems. That's all I know. :)

    Hi,

As far as I know, I think it is personal preference, as to which is best. Unless one of the Region Comparison sites has done a review, then....?

As the R2 edition comes out on 18th June, then you could simply wait. The good thing, is that HMV are doing a deluxe edition, with the DVD edition, which will also contain a free CD of Tan Dun's superb film soundtrack!

Having said this, I am pretty certain that the R1 and R2 editions will have slightly different extras on them, but I can't say what the differences are. The only way you can get them all, is to buy one copy of the R3, R1 and R2 editions! But, I doubt someone would be that mad!

Sorry, I can't be of more use. If I found out any more, I'll post to the forum, in due course.

    Hi,

'Tis me, again. I've just done a quick comparison, using Play 24/7's info. Here are the results. (N.B. Hey, don't blame me if their info is wrong!)

    R1 has:
    - Coco Lee Music Video
    - Production Info
    - Production Stills
    - Costume Designs
    - Cantonese 2.0 Surround Soundtrack
    - Thai 2.0 Surround Soundtrack
    - Subtitles in English and French only

    R2 has:
    - "Making Of..." Documentary (20 minutes)
    - Talent Files
    - Photo Gallery
    - Loads of subtitled languages!
    - Free CD soundtrack of the movie! (HMV editions ONLY!)

    BOTH editions have:
    - Audio commentary
    - 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen prints
    - Subtitled version
    - Dubbed version
    - Trailer(s)
    - Cast & Crew Biographies/Talent Files
    - Mandarin DD 5.1 soundtrack
    - English dubbed DD 5.1 soundtrack
    - Undisclosed DVD-Rom material
    - Michelle Yeoh interview

Personally, whilst the R1 disc has more physical extras, in my opinion the R2 edition wins, because of the 20 minute documentary (which I have seen, and is very, very good!)! The music video isn't that important, and is hardly likely to be watched more than once. The number of trailers is also pretty irrelevant. And the Production Stills and Costume Design material doesn't appeal to me a great deal. Finally, there's the RCE or Regional Coding Enhancement thing to worry about.

I think that the HMV R2 edition with the free soundtrack is also an added extra worth keeping. Plus, I'm 99% certain that the HMV editions will be Limited Editions, also, which has got to be worthwhile. And no RCE hassle!

Maybe, just maybe, the R2 edition wins! Could this be a first for DVD?!

Overall, I'd wait for two weeks, see what the actual R2 edition is like, (especially that HMV set), and then decide.

Hope this is of some help to you all.

    Pooch

P.S. And, no, I don't work for HMV!

...uhh... the link worked for me - it connected to a a post by craig@movietyme.com which says:

"Hi Guys, just thought i would advise you that CTHD on R1 does not contain RCE encoding, this is the second Columbia disc to not have this encoding.
Does this mean Columbia have dropped it? If so my guess is that it was hurting them too much sales wise, if this is the case then does this mean that Region coding doesn't work either as one seems to be connected to the other???
    "

    ...so... there you are!...

Play appear to mark anything they are unsure of, especially from Sony, as being RCE. CTHD is not RCE. It works fine in my Tosh, Charlies Angels did not.

    Kev, Metric, and everyone else.

    1) Metric, I apologise, but the link didn't work for me. No offence meant.

    2) Kev, are you sure the R1 disc has the "Making Of" documentary? It's jsut that when I spoke to a nice lady at Columbia TriStar, she assured me this was an R2 exclusive!

    3) As for the RCE thing, I think it looks as if we're all going to have to agree to disagree. Obviously, there are some machines that will let you play the disc, and others that won't. However, I am 99% certain that the disc DOES have RCE! But, I am happy to be proven wrong.

    Hi PoochJD,

Im 100% sure that it has a documentary on the Region 1 Version of CTHD.

I have watched it on my copy last week. The documentary lasts @20min and has assorted interviews & behind the scenes footage.

Just to confirm (using the back of the R1 edition case in front of me) that the R1 edition has the following:-

    Anamorphic Widescreen Presentation

Audio: Mandarin 5.1, English 5.1 & French Dolby Surround

    Subtitles: English, French

Ang Lee & James Schamus Commentary

BRAVO Making of Special: Unleashing the Dragon

    Conversation with Michelle Yeoh Featurette

Photo Montage, Link to Website, Filmographies, Animated Menus, Production Notes & Scene Selections.

    Hope this helps

The R1 version does have a making of doco, whether it's the same as the R2 version I wouldn't know...

Movietyme list R1 CTHD as not RCE either. I'm 100% certain it does not too :)

    Hi Again,

Well, it seems this one could go on for awhile!

If the R1 DVD does have the documentary, as Kev states, (and that seems certain now), I guess it's down to whether people want to:

    1) Get the R1 edition, because they absolutely must have the disc now!

    Or....

    2) Wait until Monday 18th June, and get the R2 disc, because the HMV Special Edition has the Soundtrack CD included, and then you don't have to worry about RCE, or NTSC picture quality. (Yes, I know that there's not that much difference between a good NTSC and a good PAL picture, but, there's still a minute difference.)

Personally, I'm going to wait, and get the R2 edition, especially as it's Columbia, and they're about the only good R2 firm, who make their DVD's worth paying for!

Anyone else care to add any details onto this thread?

I have just had a look on Amazon.co.uk and it lists the Region 2 edition has having the following extras:-

Unleashing Dragons: The Making Of" Featurette
Feature Length Commentary by Ang Lee and the Film's Producer
Conversation with Michelle Yeoh - Featurette
    2 Trailers
    Photo Gallery
    Weblink
    Filmographies
    Animated Menus
    Language Choice: Mandarin, English
Multiple Language Subtitles: English, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Turkish, Hindi, Hebrew, Bulgarian, Greek, Arabic, Portuguese
    Dolby Digital 5.1

It looks like it has the same extras as the Region 1 edition (apart from having a few more languages).

Dont suppose anyone would know if the Region 2 edition is more heavily censored than the Region 1 version (or visa versa)?

    Buns,

The HMV Special Edition of CT,HD will cost £17-99, but you can get a 10% discount, if you have an NUS Student Card (or know someone who does!)

Yes, it'll still cost more than an on-line store, but that's the choice you have to make.

Like I said, I'm happy to pay £16-10 and get the free CD soundtrack with it.

As for censorship, the film will NOT be censored on the R2 edition! There was nothing that the BBFC thought was that controversial in it, plus more leniency was given for the fact that a) the film was set in Ancient China (were sword combats/duels were normal) and that b) there's no real violence, sex or gore to get worked-up about. Plus, the film is in a foreign language, and subtitled, which means that the audience will be fairly restricted! (At least, that's the BBFC's opinion....!)

    Hope that helps.

    Pooch
