    Stating the obvious newer choices:

    Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War
    Act of War
    Warcraft 3
Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth

Or have you played all of these and are looking for something a bit more off the beaten track?

I think that comment would rule out Stronghold 2 :)

If you want good basic RTS then consider the following (in order of preference) :-

Warcraft 3 + Frozen Throne Expansion - The classic I would have thought you have played this already, if not get it now :)

Warhammer 40,000 : Dawn of War - Awesome game, beautiful graphics and simple but reasonably deep gameplay, concentrates more on troop management than base management.

Perimeter - Very interesting game, has a very unique system that at first feels like a little gimmick but actually works rather well.

Homeworld 2 - From the makers of the above, a little more complex in terms of getting your head around a 3-D game map rather than 2-D, but dam good fun and very stylish.

Ground Control 2 - Decent game, marred a bit by repetitiveness and a silly difficulty level (some levels are easy as the next one is rock hard, then another easy one).

The new LOTR games is supposed to be pretty good as well, but I haven't played it so don't want to rank it :p

Some of these are old, some new, some different but all good IMHO

    Lords of everquest
    Castle Strike
    Emporer battle for dune
    Savage-online only title but a mixture of genre's RTS/FPS/ETC....
    Warhammer 40,000 DOW
    Real War (air/land/sea)
    Praetorians
    Perimiter
    Age of empires games
    Imopssible Creatures

If I think of an more, I'll let you know

Armies of Exigo is supposed to be very good as well. Once you have upgraded that could be something worth looking at, I think it is released shortly.

Have you got just plain Generals or Zero Hour the expansion as well because the expansion is worth investing in, its only cheap anyway. Gives a lot more units and variation to the gameplay.

stronghold 2 is a fantastic game. Settlers and age of empires in one. it has got alot of bad reviews online but good reviews from UK mags and personally it has been the best game I have played ina long time.
