Recently, when I first turn on my Sony amp, I get a buzzing from the
speakers. This can be turned on and off by using the speaker select switch
on the front, and does not get louder or softer with the volume control.
Also, it goes more quickly when playing something, as opposed to when there
    is silence.

Does anybody have an idea what might be causing this? If so, do you know if
it's a serious problem that will end up showing up as something much worse?

    Any help much appreciated!

    Mark.

    Meg,

I'm pretty new at this, but I'd start with checking all the cables.
Unplug everything except the 2 front speakers and then plug in one source (eg CD-player). Make sure the phono-to-phono interconnect from the source, the speaker cable and the power cord aren't too close to one another.
If the problem is still present, try a different source and interconnect.
If it's still buzzing, try 2 different speakers...
Also, try using a 'clean' power-source. If something else is plugged in on the same circuit (especially high-wattage devices, you should see what a hairdryer does to my TV-screen) this could be causing interference...
Still buzzing? Then I'm running out of ideas...

if the earth suggestion does not work, maybe a failed capacitor in the power amp section??
