Do all plasmas buzz? Do they Buzz a bit or are they totally silent?

My new PW6 has a buzz on it - not that loud but should it be there at all?

    My PWD6 is totally silent.

(OK if I stick my ear on the grill at the back, I can just about hear a hum)

MY viera plasma has a buzzing sound like a neon lighting tube. You can only really hear it with the sound off and in a completly silent room. My other crt televisions were never completly silent either. Perhaps some do and some dont depending on how they are put together at the factory?
My buzzing is not a problem and con not be heard at normal listening levels and distance. Once the amp is on and the pillars of hell are shaking, I could not even hear a bomb going off out side the house :D

They all buzz ... but shouldn't be as loud as a neon tube. My 434 does, and the suppliers (JL) are "in discussion" with Pioneer about what to do with it...

Jimbo, please keep me updated as to what happens. I too purchased a buzzing 434 from JL and I'm on No3 now. Still not satisfied with the buzz level. (No2 had 125 hours on the clock so was sent packing!).

In fact Jimbo, you've got a Private Mail.

Hmmm.. Thanks for the replies. My plasma definately has a buzz louder than a neon tube and if I put my ear to the back like pjclark1 it's very, very buzzy. My 7 days from delivery are up on Saturday - should I ask for a replacement or not (how loud is loud?) Thing is I bought a PW6 because of the reputation for quiet operation.

    Any advice appreciated.

Hitachi 42PD5300 here, and no buzz at all, not even the slightest.

I had a 42PD3000 which buzzed like mad and I finally got Hitachi to replace it - I now have a silent (from the viewing distance at least) 42PD5300.

Hmmm - DP want to take it away and look at it, then return it if no fault found... Can I insist on a replacement or do I have to go without my £2000 purchase for a week and then get the same buzzy screen back? :(

    hi,
my pw6 is silent most of the time but sometimes it buzzes on certain channels, but if i switch over it disappears. has anyone else heard this on a pw6?

however, like David says the buzz isnt really loud enough to be heard over normal dialogue at seating distance so it doesnt bother me

Aaaahhh, this thread takes me back....

I am sure that about a year ago this topic was top of the pops on the plasma forum for quite some time.

I did a search for "plasma buzz" - it returned four pages of results!

I suggest you try a search and perhaps focus in on threads which are relevant to the brand / model of screen you have. There's a lot of good info about whether or not it's too loud, your consumer rights, which dealers are helpful with this, etc.

    Good luck!

Any device that generates a high voltage using transformers (such as plasmas and crt tv's) will generate a buzz/whine to some degree since the step up tranformers vibrate at frequencies within the frequency range of human hearing. The volume of the buzz will vary from almost inaudible to quite loud depending on design, mfg tolerance and load.

I saw a comment on another thread somewhere in this forum saying that a plasma (or anything else with a transformer in) is faulty if the transformer buzzes in it, but this is just plain ignorance.

Be prepared for a low level of background noise from most plasmas, how much you notice it will depend on how much buzz it generates, your tolerance level and the audio volume. Don't forget that HDD pvr's, VCR's and other kit also generate low level noise that we put up with for the facilities that they supply.

    my 6 month old PW6 buzz's.
When I listen out for the buzz it bugs me and I'm all for reporting a fault to panny other days it doesn't bother me so much.

I can hear it from my viewing distance when the volume isn't all that loud and the picture is bright...

The loud plasma along with the other items is enough to drive any one crazy....
    My two laptops buzz
    my dim switcher buzzes
    my pronto buzzes

I find the best way to ignore it is have a few drinks
