Pretty much as per title, is there any catches to these sites offering to ship tax free cigarettes and tobacco (the site I was looking at was shipping from spain) or can I genuinly be getting my nicotine fixes at sometimes around about 50% normal UK shop price.

You can buy them but you are not guaranteed to get your order with out customs confiscating them first and requesting you pay the tax and duty - when i smoked i had a relativity small order of 6x50g pouches confiscated.:(

Yes I have done this once for my Gf i don't smoke, they took weeks to arrive and i thought i had been ripped off, from Spain too and they marked them up as books so customs didn't nab me, but i wouldn't do it again it was too stressful.

Don't you just know anybody who can get you cheap baccy or ciggys, as that's what she does now, just go round there when she wants any.

Maybe fortunate that you don't. It is estimated that 20 - 25% of all tobacco bought from the criminal fraternity is counterfeit, manufacture of which may be unhygienic. Tests have shown them to contain higher than usual levels of some nasty substances including arsenic and some unexpected additions such as rodent droppings. Smoking is bad enough for your health as it is.

I knew that someone would put that, fortunately for us my nephew does a tobacco run to Belgium every 8 weeks with 3 others one being a none smoker so they get there allowance between them and he then sells it on to us at £5 a packet and he makes a profit on that , costs €3.60/£3 a packet (gold leaf), so we know that its kosher thankfully.

I thought about doing this a while ago but thought it was probably more grief than it was worth.

Luckily for me I now have a regular supplier. 200 B&H Gold for £40. He drops me off a carton each week.

Err.... don't you need to be a bit careful here folks?

I could well be wrong but I thought duty free is subject to no re-sale, or something like that.

Yes this is correct, I wont tell the tax man if you don't ;).

Did you know that you can bring in 60 packets of tobacco @ 50g each coming from another European country.

Anyway aren't we getting off topic now?

    Yes, sorry.

I was just mindful of people telling the world about their mate who sells them duty free stuff on a regular basis.

Personally, I would not buy 'baccy on line. No idea where it's come from or what's in it.

    Both would be illegal.

......and coming from within the EU it cannot be Duty Free.

Nowhere, the stuff we get is duty paid within europe and here is the place that tells you the allowances > EU Duty Free Allowances | UK Duty Free Allowance

3kg of smoking tobacco is 60 x 50g is it not?

    Excerpt "
The current (2011) duty and tax free allowances when travelling from another EU country to the UK are:

    • 3200 cigarettes
    • 400 cigarillos
    • 200 cigars
    • 3 kg of smoking tobacco
    • 110 litres of beer
    • 10 litres of spirits
    • 90 litres of wine
    • 20 litres of fortified wine e.g. port or sherry."
    :).

Perhaps you should look at the HMR&C site...............HM Revenue & Customs: Tax and duty on goods brought to the UK from the European Union

I don't get it my nephew does, and anyway from the site you mention >
Customs checks when coming from the EU

If a customs official from the UK Border Agency (UKBA) thinks you may be bringing in excise goods such as alcohol and tobacco from the EU for commercial use - perhaps to sell to other people or simply for reimbursement - they may ask you questions and make checks. You may be asked about:

    • the type and quantity of goods you've bought
    • why you bought them
    • how you paid for them
    • how often you travel
    • how much you normally smoke or drink
Although there are no limits on the amount of alcohol and tobacco you can bring in from EU countries, customs officials are more likely to ask you questions if you have more than the following:

So he says he smokes a lot, it does not say its illegal to bring in 3kg does it :).

Crossed wires I think, yes I know he can bring in as much as he likes, I thought you were saying he was limited to 3kg.

OK mate, it was 3kg + before you was asked anything, looks like its 1kg before they ask that is if they ask, he has never said he has been questioned yet and he went at the beginning of December, and I know its illegal to sell it on but in reality I don't think they will put you under any form of surveillance, maybe if he shipped up in a transit chock full of it and said it was all his .
