I have just signed up to Ebay and I am a little confused about paying. I'm looking at the payment page and it is asking me to enter my debit card details but I'm unsure whether it is safe or not. I haven't yet signed up to PayPal and I don't know if I need (or should) to or not. Does the seller end up with my debit card details if I don't sign up to PayPal or does Ebay take the payment from my card and then forward it to the seller?

I've never used Ebay before but I want to make sure I pay safely.

    Thanks.

Pay Pal as you then have some type of cover !
Even tho Pay Pal are crap sometimes at sorting out deals gone bad.
If you use a debit card then you have no comeback as transactions made online with debit cards don't have the same online transaction cover that credit cards do !

PayPal if there is an option.

My personal rule is to never use my debit card for online purchases - credit cards yes, but not debit cards.

I have two reasons for this

    (i) The debit card is tied to your bank account - if it is hacked then the attacker could get access to your bank account and your personal money - whereas a credit card is a limited pot of the credit card company's money.

(ii) The hassle. If my credit card is compromised then at worst I just cancel the card - I can get by without it and it's a pretty simple matter to get another. But if my debit card is compromised it has a much bigger impact to my life. My bank account might need to be frozen, can't get cash - it would be a major hassle.

So my rule is, keep your debit card safe and use credit cards.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

As I keep saying to friends/colleagues, even if you have the 'cash' to buy something, use your credit card.
Then just arrange a quick electronic transfer from your account to the card.
That way, you've all the protection the CC offers, but you won't be charged much (if any) interest.
If you have a CC with the likes of airmiles, you can rack up some points in the process.:smashin:

    Thanks for the advise.

I have just created a PayPal account, but now it's asking me to add a payment method. It's giving me 2 options, "Add Bank Account" or "Add Debit or Credit Card". I take it I should avoid using my debit card there too, and instead add my bank account?

Edit: As you might have guessed, I don't have a Credit Card.

I use my bank account. That way I can pay for it out of my bank, some out of paypal and some out of my bank, or completely out of paypal.

As soon as the £150 is payed off my credit card it's getting shredded, they are the .

Done, sort-of. I completed the sign-up with Ebay and I used my bank account, although it appears that I have to wait a few days for them to deposit money into my account so they can verify me. Does this mean I can't pay for my purchase until that has completed?

yeah they will take it 2 amounts (both under a pound).
You just have to varify pay pal of the 2 amounts.
    Should take 2-3 days

I beleive so, not through Paypal you won't anyway.

If you're stuck I'm sure if you e-mail the seller and tell them the situation they won't mind waiting a couple of days for payment.

Good idea, I'll email the seller and explain it to them.

    Thanks for all your help.
