Trying to get my son (aged 13) and iPhone for Christmas. It needs to be a sensible size (not the size of a tablet) and have a headphone socket. I'm pondering an SE but isn't it a bit long in the tooth?

I realise there isn't much point in going for a 6 over it and I'd have to at least consider a 7. But no headphone socket.

An SE still has the same processor as the 6s so is hardly a bit long in the tooth. Many business users still buy the 6s even though others have superseded it. The 6s screen is probably the best compromise in being not too big and not too small.

Why are you bothered about the headphone socket? The 7 comes with an adapter if you want to use old 3.5 mm headphones but in an age of wireless charging most now use Bluetooth headphones. You can get some in-ear Bluetooth for £15 so hardly an issue.

The 7 has a degree of water proofing and future proofing but costs £250 more than the £300 SE, so it really is a case of how much you can afford.

He has two pairs of Beats he uses and wants to use them on his next mobile.

I may look at the 6s instead then. Thanks for the feedback.

The OP's offspring may be a discerning listener and concerned about the post processing to the signal done by the lightning to analogue 3.5mm adaptor

    :D

Personally I would go cheaper. At thirteen a phone is liable to get squished by gym gear or sat on

just putting it out there, I generally use my lightning to 3.5 adaptor with my iphone when using my shures at work and to be brutishly honest, I do not think there is a massive amount of difference when using my mojo. I would not be put off not having a headphone jack if your son wants to utilise his beats headphones.

Doubt it, he has beats! :) As Lemmy said, like listening through a wet towel.

Seriously, unless he's a genuine audiophile, the adapter won't make that much discernible difference.

My boy has an SE and one of the best things about it, apart from the size for him is the repairs costs. Screens are cheap and easy to replace.

After a lot of discussion I think the SE may be the winner. I'm not sure I see the point of going for a 6 and the 6S is considerably more expensive. The 7 is probably a ways off due to him loving his Beats (I've no idea why).
