I'm considering a Panasonic 37" Viera so was wondering if there's anything I should know about before going ahead.

It's my first plasma so I don't really know what to look for. It's for tv and a bit of gaming rather than home cinema as I've got a pj/7.1 set up for that so it seemed the obvious choice with it's on board speakers but if anyone can recommend something better then go ahead.

I've heard a lot of talk about screen burn and short lifespans when it comes to plasmas. Is a plasma a good idea as an everyday tv or would I be better of sticking with my current Sony telly?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To be honest I'm not sure! The reason I was looking at the Viera is the built in speakers and not needing to buy seperate input boards. I think maybe the PE50 but feel free to advise me otherwise!

PE50 is far better than outgoing Viera PE30 model IMHO. There is also a PV500 model due in May which is high def compatible and will cost a few hundred quid more.

I know the new 42 inch Veira is in the shops but does anyone know when the 37 inch (pe50) version will be available?

I've just received and set up a 42" PE30 - it's a fantastic TV. I'm very pleased with the picture quality and sound and was easy to set up.
As a wall mount, it also looks very sleek. Would recommend.

I wouldn't buy a PE30 when the replacement is so much better (allegedly) and cheaper as well! How can buying a PE30 be justified when a better cheaper alternative is available?

So what's the difference between G6 and G8? Can you explain what you mean by the PE50 being cut down?

So the PE50 has the G8 glass right? What's the card slot for? It seems the PE50 will be ideal for my requirements. Is there any reason I may want a VGA input that I haven't thought of? I will be connecting my digibox by RGB scart or component and dvd the same. I only rarely play games so I'm not worried how I'll connect the ps2 to it.

Anyone know the RRP on the this telly? I know it's less than the PE30 but I'd like to know the 'official' price before I start hunting for a deal!

    Cheers

One last question! In terms of PQ will this be the same as the other current Panasonic plasmas? What I mean is has PQ been sacrificed in order to cover cost of speakers and the other extras found on Vieras?

The new 37PE50 is better PQ than other Panasonics. No sacrifices at all, and the new G8 is IMO a rather big step-up in quality.

Panasonic's online shop is the closest you'll get to an 'RRP', and it's £1996.99 for the 37PE50 with wall bracket. These prices mean next to nothing (look at the old Viera price...close to £4000!) though. QED are already selling what you want for under £1400.

The only thing I'd point out is that the 42PE50 is only £300 more...

In TCR today I saw lots of 42" new Vieras, and very nice they looked, too. Picture quality looked slightly better than the PW7s around them, crisper, but that might be a crap PW7 setup. One of the blokes in one of the shops was saying that the speakers in the new Vieras weren't nearly as good as the old ones - well, they're not nearly as big, so that may be true.

Overall, my impression was also that they're considerably thinner than the 30 Vieras, which has to be a good thing (don't know what the specs say). Looks like June before we can compare to the 500s, so get your waiting boots on...
