buy from Richer Sounds?

I was wondering if people advise buying a plasma from Richer Sounds?

I have bought from them before (for Hi-Fi seperates), but never something for as much as £3000!

Would you consider them a reliable dealer for plasmas/after care?

Now if they would only hurry up and start stocking the Panny 6 model  !

Thanks!

I'll give a good answer to you tomorrow, see my post on Hitachi 42PMA400E that I have had some teething problems with.

7/10 ... once again see the other post. The fact they replaced my screen with no quibble as they had another in stock was really good, but ddin't mitigate the balls-up with the dvd player.

I have seen them do this to another guy wen i was looking at the screen a few weeks ago in the store. Guy came in , this isn't working.. out comes the cd and they flashed it, working fine.

I think I'll probably buy from there again, given the good price and service being good despite the problemswith the dvd.

Have bought a couple of things from them, Yamaha RXV1000RDS Amp and SoundStyle AV unit (XS310). No real problems other than stock levels and when they'd be in.

Not had any need to require tech support or anything, or get anything fixed so can't comment on that side of them, but would buy again - not to sure about Plasma though, although local SevenOaks shop comes overs as being probably worse for customer service and attitude (and dearer to)

Oh belive me - I stayed well away from it!

The reason I wouldn't buy from them again (well that particular branch) is not one of them had a clue. They were quick to sell it but not quick to offer advice, they argued amoungst themselves about stuff and then "guessed" about things with the plasma.

I'm not being funny but out of 6 sales stuff not one of them had a clue. I expect slightly better than people guessing as to what I will have to do to get certain issues sorted.

After two weeks in this forum I had to go back to Richer to get some other cables and then found myself having a row with the bloke about problems I was having with the screen, he insisted that the QED scart to six phono would be more than enough to eradicate any problems i had with picture quality.

Needless to say he was talking rubbish, and I ended up listening to the people on this forum (although I was rather stubborn and inqusitive and wanted to try things on my as well as listening to others, although in hindsight i could've saved myself a lot of time and effort and just done what the ppl in the forum said in the first place)

Only thing I personally would buy from RS is low cost stuff like speaker cable or video tapes. Not a Plasma.

To be honest, I don't think this is a RS problem, more of an industry one. HiFi stores just aren't that clued up about plasmas but, because of the difference between CRT and plasma prices tend to sell them.

I could easilly have just copied/pasted your reply and changed the name from RS to Sevenoaks! Of the three of their stores I have visited, trying to descide between the Panny 6 and the Pio MXE staff were unhelpful and disinterested at Holborn, unhelpful, agressive, miss-informed and didn't know the products they were selling at Swiss Cottage.

Thankfully the Kings Road staff were the opposite. OK, they wouldn't get the 2 plasmas I was interested in into the shop for me to compare, but they explained why (not just saying 'No'), talked about their experiences and how those screens tended to compare IN THERE OPINION (he was clear that that was how HE saw them, unlike the others who had it as some gosple truth).

So I'm now more tempted to buy from RS - Sadly, when it comes to plasmas at least, the old adage of the more you pay, the better the servies doesn't always seem to hold true.

[hopeing balanced experience is within the rules! ^_^]

I bought a 42" LG plasma and had it 10 days, decided I wanted the Panasonic and they swapped it no problems 0 even beat nexnix on the price, couldnt be any better. BTW the store was Stockport.

I bought my Panasonic plasma from RS in Brighton.

I couldn't fault the service or the product. I was nervous about signing that the plasma was undamaged before taking it away, but everything was fine.

A number of phone calls were needed between viewing and collecting and they kept all their promises.

They weren't that clued up on the technical side but I actually believe you do get better advice from a specialist outlet - and you pay for that.

Something I did like was a willingness to admit it if they didn't know something, rather than bluff and bull.

RS did me a good price and so I was willing to accept the technical shortcomings. Had I bought from a specialist at RRP I would have expected more.

I went to the new RS store in Leeds yesterday to check out the plasmas they had and look for a home cinema kit. I specifically asked about the Hitachi pma400 plasma(they had 5 on display)and the Panasonic sc-mt1. The salesman I talked to seemed quite knowlageble but he didn't know what the panny ram recording system was and said that plasma screen burning wasn't an issue at all on the new models. I got a quote for the plasma for 2500 not including a tuner(which I don't need anyway) or stand, the stand was 170. I didn't think that was too bad but he did try to push the aftercare on me and a more expensive cinema kit. With the cables and delivery it would have cost me 3100 quid. I then took a walk round to Sevenoaks Sound & Vision with said quote and they matched the plasma price and the stand price even though both were more on their lists. As for the cinema kit....................lets not go there, eh? I am now rethinking my speaker kit options but will more than likely go back to 7oaks as they offered me a 0% intrest option.

Hi Machine Head,

I've been looking around leeds myself the past couple of days at various places doing Plasma (RS, 7Oaks, Harvey Nics, Dixons etc) and was amazed at the differences in price for similar items.

The best looking one i'd seen was the Fujitsu P42HHA10 in Harvey Nics, followed by the Panasonic in 7Oaks, but customer services at 7oaks was crap basically IMO.

Guy in HNs was enthusiastic, but when i asked about price matching they said against shops only, not web, and that RS really pee em of :) - he suggested that RS screens were Grey Imports (but according to RS's brochure and site, they don't supply Grey Imports).

Didn't think the Plasma on show in RS were setup anywere near what they should be, especially the Panny on the end (right most one nearest counter) - lots of ghosting in images, esp text.

The RS aftercare (I gather the 3yr warranty bit?) is cheap compared to most other companies though. HN wanted £1200 for a 5yr one

We are undecided as to whether to get a plasma at the moment, mainly due to cost, as although screen maybe £2000+, all the other bits (stand/wall mount/tuner etc, etc) add a pretty hefty lump ontop.

regards
Gary

That was one of the features I too picked up on. Richersounds After Care is a lot cheaper. Also they Include a 'buy back' poicy (they will buy your plasma back off you for 50% price.

I've personally had no problem with RS - they refund/swop items without quibble and the 50% buy back thing is not bad value. They even gave me £35 worth of cables free once because they couldn't get their switch machine to work!

Thing is though, when I went in to look at some of the plasmas recently the salesman gave me (what I now know to have been) completely wrong advice about connections. He tried to sell me the Hitachi which was the only plasma they had in stock and swore blindly that the Pioneer was 42" and not 43" claiming this to be a misprint in their brochure! Needless to say, I walked away. Whether he was lying or simply mistaken was irrelevant as either way I was not prepared to trust him with such a large purchase if he could not get such a simple thing right.

I think, like all stores, it depends on the salesman you get.

Pop back with a tape recorded and ask him if he is willing to put that statement on record so you can RS for an official comment... and sit back and watch him run away from his statement ^_^
