Okay, I have a feeling this thread may well end up moved (and if i've posted it on the wrong place, I apologise), but you'll probably see why I choose to post it here.

At work recently, we got a large box of Bush HDMI upscale DVD players. However, one quick look at the box reveals the greatest surprise of them all...

    ..it plays HD DVD's! *ahem*

"Prepare to be blown away by the new standard in home entertainment! Thrill to movies in eye-popping, true High Definition with Bush's first player for the next-generation HD DVD format. This model also playes standard DVD's in near-HD resolution for improved HD for improved picture quality.

Next-generation HD DVD format compatable for true HDTV video with amazing colour and incredible high-resolution surround sound"

How could someone at Bush/Alba be SO daft!??! As the manager of an electrical department, it hurts me to have to put out misleading product such as this (and as if the next gen format war isn't confusing enough for Joe Public). Anyone think I should contact them saying I bought a load of HD-DVD's especially and they don't play ;) ...

    The player is £50.

...I really am gonna try playing an HD-DVD on one of these when I get back to work tomorrow. Although the chances of it actually working are currently sat within the 0 to -5% range.

Not wanting to nit-pick, but the box does not mention "HD-DVD" like you have quoted but does mention "HD DVD".

However, after checking the true spec's of this machine, I do agree, the box is blatently misleading.

My apologies Ian, I typed that so fast, I didn't notice i'd done that. I've edited the original post accordingly.

But yes, agreed, Bush/Alba have to be pretty stupid to put a faux pas like that on the box. So, who fancies sending them an email first?

:rotfl: Breaking News: "More good news for HD DVD, Bush introduces £50 HD DVD players!"

Some of these manufacturers are really on thin ice here. Lol, all the more reason to sue someone.

It does specifically state: "...true High Definition with Bush's first player for the next-generation HD DVD format".

Man, if I was Joe, it would have me convinced that's for sure.

I'll be sure to take a couple into work tomorrow and give it a go and report back tomorrow.

...complete with lovely photos of the 'no disc' symbol.

Well its on Amazon.Spec mentions not playing HD-DVD or Blurry.
But also says not Progressive scan and not an Upscaler.

So what the hell are you getting for £70?

I can't recall if it has Progressive or not (I think it does), but it definitely does upscale via HDMI.

..I was about to say £100 to you good man, but since Amazon are doing them for £70... CURSES. Hahaha..

"Bush's first player for the next-generation HD DVD format. This model also plays standard DVD's". If this isn't misleading, I don't know what is! This could not be interpreted any other way than to suggest that it playes HD DVD's

Nit picking again, the correct spelling for the new format is "HD DVD" without a "-"

    http://www.toshibahddvd.co.uk/the-hd-dvd-format.cfm

So that makes the box even more misleading - it is clearly saying that it can play HD DVDs. As in the new format. That's absolutely unbelieveable!

From the screenshots posted I would say that was a genuine HD DVD player - now given it's price and the company involved it clearly isn't - but it mentions next gen HD DVD playback. I mean it specifically says:

Now if it can't play HD DVDs then that's not just misleading - it's an outright lie :thumbsdow

Thats an Amazon spec, it didn't come from the manufacturer.

Exactly. The box says it can (from the picture shown). So either that is incorrect (and accordingly in breach of trading standards) or it can play HD DVD. I'm prepared to bet which it is - but we'll have to wait and see.

As mentioned above, this quote is the potentially most libelous. The fact that it says "also plays standard DVD's" implies that it was made for another format i.e. HD DVDs, but it can "still" also play traditional DVD's which is a "bonus" or "extra" feature.
Personally, I've never liked the use of "HD" as Hard drive on current DVD recorders as this is potentially misinterpretable as meaning "High Definition".
What with all the dodgy/expensive HD software and HDCP issues at the moment, I think the companies are starting to take the mick a bit now and almost treat us consumers with contempt and a lack of respect!!

So its could be a 2 channel HD-DVD player :rotfl:

Clearly says on the box its a 2 channel player, now that would be a total waste...

That would be a waste on a regular DVD player. I presume thats analugue outputs and not that the player is limited to 2 channels.

Odd one this. If this doesn't play HD DVDs then something is very wrong and someone has made a complete balls up.

I can't see that the description on the box could be any clearer that it definitely plays HD DVDs.

Can't wait for the OP to try it out and let us all now.
