Burping and video stutter Vista Home Premium

I cannot find anyone with a similar problem.

Recently upgraded to Vista HP and subsequently to SP1. Cannot be 100% sure, but following SP1 all video playback suffers from a 'burp' in the audio and a few seconds of video 'stutter'. This happens every 15 minutes or so. I also don't think the quality of the video playback is as high quality as with MCE on XP - this could just be perception though and an aging plasma...

It affects live TV, recorded TV, DVD playback. I have tried MS standard MPEG decoder (as supplied with Vista), nVidia decoders and also one or two other free ones to no avail. I have been using the VMCD utility to switch between decoders.

Any ideas? Could it be that my onboard video/audio hardware is not up to the task or is it likely to be a decoder issue? Something else?

(One other recent change was to the Nova T500 from twin Black Golds, but this was done a while back whilst still using MCE on XP.)
