Hi,

Just recently built my first PC comprising of the following :

Shuttle SB86i Barebone PC (Socket 775 Intel 915G PCI-E BTX G) *
Crucial 2x512MB 184Pin DIMM PC3200 Unbuffered Non-ECC
Pioneer DVD+-R/RW Dual Layer 16x IDE Silver - Drive Only
Intel Pentium D 930 Socket 775 3GHz 2x2MB FSB800
Western Digital Caviar RE 160GB S150 16MB
Samsung 940BW 19' Monitor

* shuttle PC has an inbuilt graphic card.

Powered on the PC and is fine, but there's no signal on the monitor i.e. message on monitor "check signal cable" (I should see white lines at least, correct?). Connected the VGA cable and Samsung monitor to my laptop which works fine so eliminates problem with this end.

Also tried the CMOS reset, but still no signal between PC and monitor.

When I insert the OS disc, the reader kicks in, but still nothing on the monitor except the same message as before.

Took everything out and re-seated all the components, but still no luck.

Speaking to a collegue, the barebone PC should "speak" to the monitor even if there was no memory, cpu or dvd installed. Does this point to a faulty inbuilt graphic card or motherboard or possibly dodgy VGA connection on the PC? Are there anyways to test each of these parts without taking the pc to a pc specialist to take a look?

Rgds

Do you hear any beeps from the internal speaker (if it has one and is plugged in right) when you first turn it on? I'm not sure if these come pre built but if not did you connect both power supply cables? Theres a rectangle one AND a smallish square one that if not connected right could stop your PC from booting. "D1 ATX1/BTX1: Power connecrit 4-pin" in your manual I think.

I'm sure your CPU just droped into place? If you had to froce it theres a problem. Try it with Just one memory stick, you should be able to get into the BIOS without the harddrive and DVD ROM but i'm not sure that you could without any memory.

To tell you the truth the inbuilt video chipset is pretty pants you would be much much better of with a real graphics card. But it should be working.

Tom,

My PC has the 915G chipset as well. It worked fine when I first set it up but I lost video one day. The motherboard has 4 different video connectors on it & I eventually discovered you can switch outputs with a ctrl-alt-Fn key combination with the intel graphics chip.

ctrl-alt-F1 switches it back to VGA mode on mine.

The other thing to check is if you need to do anything to use the buit-in graphics rather than a PCI-E card. I recently upgraded to an Nvidia card & had to remove some jumpers from the motherboard to disable on-board graphics first. I would expect your Shuttle to be pre-configured for the on-board grpahics but maybe there's some jumpers that need fitting/changing?

the CPU slid in fine (aligned the triangle and circle to the appropriate corner), and both rextangular & square power supplies are slotted in.

Yes, the CPU is a dual core. I have sent an email to shuttle to check if this is supported by the chipset 915 or not. If this is incompatiable, should this affect the pc sending any video pictures to the monitor? (I didn't upgrade the video card as I'm not a gamer).

I'll give it another go with just 1 memory stick.

Reading through the manual, "the mainboard is jumperless and set for common usage standard". From this, I didn't expect to make any jumper alterations?

I'll check for VGA mode anyway using ctrl-alt-F1

Thanks for advice guys

Double check again that you have got the small 4-pin P4 connector from the PSU plugged into the system board fully as well as the main power connector, sounds obvious i know but this is easily missed (I've built hundreds of PC's and have missed it myself)

This would give exactly the symptoms you have

That guy on that link I posted had the same symptoms as you and he was told by another forum user the motherboard does not support dual-core CPU'S. Not a very reliable source but it has been posted in the news groups that that shuttle does not support dual-core.

Where did you buy it from? I would send them an e-mail and ask them.

With a bit of luck shuttle will e-mail you back confirming 100% if it does or does not.

If it does not you could try and see if you could send the shuttle back and get one that does. The long distance selling act might come in handy but you would have to return it in an unused condition which would make it easier than returning the CPU. And some places might want to try and charge you a "restocking fee".

But please get confirmation before acting.
