building a website

Hi,

I know its not exactly in the right place but seeing as though I'm in the Mac clan now and everyone seems to helpful and knowledgeable I was wondering where the best place would be to host a small website that won't cost anything. I've never built one before and its not going to be nothing serious.

Thanks a lot for any info.

Mark :)

Another vote for .mac :smashin:

I built my own website a while ago, mainly for showcasing photos. The cost of hosting was around £50 per year, I spent a few hours a night for a week getting it the way I wanted (basic, functional, simple) and then around an hours work each time I added a new album (inc. editing photos, resizing and uploading).

For similar money I've just bought a .mac account. Within 20 minutes I've uploaded 8 new albums via iPhoto as it's SO damn easy. Find an event or group of photos, select it, click Web Album, chose your options, OK. Done :)

I've not done anything with iWeb yet, but if it's as easy as that it'll take no time at all!

On top of all that you get the iDisk features, backups, mail, online storage etc etc. It's a bit of a bargain really :)

thanks guys i sort of thought that might be the response. i got offered this when I set up my mac but clicked I didn't want it for now. Would I be able to still open up a .mac account in say a months time?

yes mate,

you can open an account any time. You can also get a 60 day free trial so you can check it out and see if you like it.

have a look here

hope this helps :smashin:

.mac is very easy to use. I have worked in the ISP industry for many many years and still have a few servers of my own around but use .mac's web gallery as it is very easy. IIRC it was one click in iphoto and aperture to push an album to .mac. I can not think how they could make it easier.

The same is true if you use iweb too (as in easy).

How do you access the internet? Almost all ISPs offer at least some space.

thanks guys i'll get myself a .mac account opened shortly.

i access the net using ntl/virgin media bb but the .mac is sounding like a real winner! :)

Go to the Virgin website and then choose Selfcare and enable your webspace from there, give it a go you're already paying for it. I have a couple of unused .Mac subs but keep getting put off using it because of all the poor reports I keep reading about it.

As somebody recently said elsewhere on this forum, don't believe all you read without trying it yourself!

Constructing a website using iWeb is an absolute doddle and the results are very professional. Haven't looked at Virgin's offering but since they are a very Windoze-centric company, I doubt if their web offering will be as easy to construct.

Have just visited the Virgin sitebuilder. It's a nightmare!

Who the hell uses an ISPs sitebuilder? We're Mac owners.

I don't doubt that iWeb is easy, its an Apple app. I have RapidWeaver and that's easy too and more powerful. How useful is iWeb for publishing elsewhere other than to .Mac?

I too am interested in building a website with iWeb and .mac
One question though! :
What does a .mac web address look like?? www.?????
cheers for your replies

You have two choices really. You can stick with the standard .mac address, which for your gallery would be gallery.mac.com/*username*

The other option is to register your own domain name (plenty of places around to do this and very cheap) and then direct it to your .mac pages. There is some limited, but functional options within .mac to help you do this with just a little support from the company you registered your domain with. This option is what you need if you want www.stollystarter.com or something :)

I used the .Mac trial years ago and it was helpful (had another when testing iWeb). If you're a newbie too websites, programming, etc, I really suggest iWeb.

For professionals - Transmit (FTP), Photoshop/Illustrator and TextMate is the unbeatable combination! :D

To save some money on .mac, have a look at eBay for .mac subscription auction such as this listing.

There are a lot of free, ad supported hosting providers around. One that I have used in the past is Bravenet which gives you tools to build a website and 50Mb of disk space. You can purchase more space (e.g. 30Gb costs $99 per year)
