Build of Home Cinema Room...

I've just raised my screen in the HC by 3 inches. This has enabled me to take the Keystone off the projector and have the image without any distortion...BRILLIANT!

It also means I can put my 3ft Mickey under the screen and away from the shelves of DVD's as it was becoming a pain to actually get any DVD's!:smashin:

I am seriously looking at getting a HD player now having demoed both the blue ray and HD-DVD in various stores.

Price-wise and the interactive screen really appeals to me on the HD-DVD so I think I will be going down this route...watch this space!

Hi Les!

Just a quick question....

What setting do you have Sky HD on for output? 720p or 1080i?

I was reading on another thread that Skys implementation of 720p is pants and that many people get a better picture by throwing 1080i at their screen and letting that rescale.

Just a thought.

Bob

Hi Bob,

Yep your right. I have the picture scaled at 1080i due to the picture quality of SD from Sky.

Not ideal, as the PJ's native is 720p, but needs must!

Just read this thread, excellent. I am going to convert my garage and it will be approx 19' x 9' so not much wider than yours but I will have more length to play with.

How is the sound above the room, I also have an en-suite above it so just wanted to know what the levels are like, I also have kids to consider.

You might as well spend it before children come along, it will definately be a play room then...

I recently had my HC ISF and HAA calibrated by Neil at AV Doctor and it sounds and looks the business. Certain aspects of the room & equipment were brought up of it's low and high points and they were adjusted to bring it to it's full potential. I must admit my HC never sounded so good.

What did you have to change? What about sounds reflecting off the walls?

Also where were the recliners from? We have the lay-z-boy matinee and the ones with fridges at work, but they are a lot of money.

Hi Jazz Monkey,

Sorry I haven't replied earlier but I have only checked on this thread recently as I have had very little to report.

The sound above my room is noticable and not that well sound proofed TBH.
It is the home office and if the wife is playing music on the Mac upstairs or I am watching a movie in the HC then we can hear it. Not too much I can do now...unless I ripped up the floorboards upstairs (not likely!) and put down some rockwool insualation!

So if you're in the process of doing this, then I would definately recommend getting as much soundproofing between the floors as possible!

As for the HCC and ISF calibration, the noticable changes were speaker placement and configuration as well as installation and calibration of the Lumagen HDQ into the system. The picture is noticebly more sharp and natural looking and the sound fills the room more when it's at a reference level. If you can afford a processor I highly recommend it!

I don't seem to have alot of problems with reflections but putting up some accoustic foam would not harm...only visually it may look a bit odd.

My biggest headache is the door...it may as well not be there. I am after a good solid fire door but it needs to fit in with the style of the others doors in close proximity, otherwise it's going to look slightly odd.

I did enquire with regards to accoustic studio doors but they are metal and very pricey...both to buy and install! Some time this year I will invest in a new door though!

The recliners are from Argos, which I think are very good value. Look in there catalogue...they have some very stylish ones recently. They really do the trick!

I can't believe this is all done now, I am still looking for something to buy for the room, but I have to stop!! I keep buying animated maquettes and it's filling up the room on a rapid scale!! :smashin:

One thing I have noticed while having a dedicated HC is that I am soo less tolerant when I visit the local cinema now! Don't get me wrong, I really could not put up with burberry capped dead heads that frequent the front rows of the flea pit...but now...if some idiot looks like a trouble maker on enetering the cinema my hackles go up!!!

It's not good...but it does let you appreciate what you have at home!!

Hi Bob,

Howz things, you will have to come and visit...get the wife to sort something out!!:smashin:

Just a bit of an update on the 1080i issue with Sky HD. Since getting the Lumagen HDQ, the processor is doing all the upscaling so Sky is set at automatic to take advantage of this on the standard def channels.

Keep in touch!

Les.

Excellent thread... appreciate the time and effort youve put in to update every step of the way.

Im thinking of building an outhouse in our back garden (same as the neigbours) which can house a home cinema, but the missus aint having none of it. She claims I'll be in there all the time (she's right, but thats besides the point!) :)

I have a statue collection which the missus hates, and Ive promised her it'll go into our future cinema room once we have one. Her call now !

Les, i notice your into collectables and read a while back that you like LOTR. Here's a very classy collectible which can add a little something to your room...
Gandalf_ShadowFax

Once again, great job...!

Thanks for the reply.

I will be planning lots of soundproofing in my set up as I may as well rip the roof down before I start and invest the extra as you said the sound travels well through the walls/roof.
I will also hopefully have enough to invest in a scaler as I have had a demo before and they sort out all sorts of annoying problems you tend to notice once you start reading these forums.
I will be getting a solid fire door which won't really match the rest of the doors but will provide much better sound proofing than the standard door and is much cheaper than a specialist door.
I do like the sound of the new Audessey EQ but at £2500 does seem quite a lot of money, I would prefer one built in to the amp.
I got a quote from a builder to brick up the garage door of £3240 which is very steep so I am getting a few more quotes as the missus and I wasn't impressed and with moving the boiler (£500), and a new shed (£780), on top of me doing the garden (£800) it soon starts eating in to the budget.

Hi Guys,

Just a few updated photos of how my system looks presently. Nothing too major has changed but the photo does show the the inclusion of the Lumagen HDQ.

Also Mickey has a new home, front stage right and keeping a careful hold of the Harmony 895!

Just to let you guys know, that if you turn to page 20 of this months Home Cinema Choice (issue 145), you will find myself along with photos of my Home Cinema (nothing you haven't already seen on the forums!) in the AV-Addict section.:smashin:

I'm totally new to home cinema and i want to build a dedicated room at the bottom of my garden 16ft x 13ft, a few people have said that i can get away with build it out of thick ply/chip wood with insulation between the two. Is this true?

Hi Newcomer, welcome to the forums!

Hmmm, I am no builder but if I understand you correctly you want to build the whole room from chip wood? I don't think this will be water or air tight enough for you to have equipment at the bottom of your garden.

If I was doing this then I would either have a professional builder lay foundations (with a damp course) and create a brick structure. Or you can get a garage installed (which now come in pieces for installation) with a solid base to lay it on. Then you can seal the whole stucture, soundproof it and create the interior as you want. I am sure a few guys have done this exactly on the forums!!

I assume that he is hoping to avoid the need for a planning application by building a timber structure in his garden. Not sure if this idea would work, as building something of that size might well spoil his neighbours' enjoyment of their properties (which is one of he reasons why we have planning restrictions).

Hi Guys,

Thought I would give this post a bump as I haven't been on it for a while mainly due to little progress.

However the past 6 months have seen a few changes in the 'movie room'.

Firstly, I have very relutantly had to let my Lumagen HDQ go mainly due to my work drying up big time last year and so it seemed wise to sell a very expensive luxury...but I really do miss it!!:thumbsdow:(

Then contrary to that (and to work picking up again...touch wood!) I was bought my first Blu-ray player for Christmas (the whole family chipped in!) which was the Sony BDP-S550.:smashin:

On the back of this I sold my Pioneer player, so it is looking quite minimalistic on my kit at the mo!

On the back of the Blu-ray, I am looking to upgrade my Receiver to one with all the HD codecs and few more HDMI inputs and 24p. But as my Yammy has HDMI and upscales, I am in two minds whether to go for it (although the Yammy is up for Sale in the Classifieds section!);)

Anyway, as soon as I can grab the camera I will post some photo updates!

Hi Les,

Quick question about your screen - do you assemble the fixed screen yourself?

If so, are they easy to put together?

Thanks,

Ryan

Yep I did. It wasn't too bad actually and they are quite light even when fully assembled. Just follow the instructions though, I kinda went in full throttle and kinda got a bit stuck, just the fact I slotted the frame in the wrong position!!!:suicide: DUH!!

Does the Yam have a analogue multi channel in? You could just use the BDP550's analogue multichannel out instead of getting a HDMI equipped amp, at the very least as a stop gap measure.

As far as I was aware as my Yammy already has HDMI it will accept the new codecs?

Due to a flood from the upstairs shower basin, I will have to redecorate the HC this year, hopefully before Christmas, so I am looking at a few redesigns in the room.

The biggest will be the fact the room will going darker, a lot darker colour-wise. I'll keep you posted with any developments and any major changes with photos!!!
