Makes good reading this webbie and Ive got some ideas ..

I dont like second hand or online buying <-- Mostly due to impatience and wanting to get my grubby mits on the new equipment

My budget is circa 350 ( inc cables expecting 400 )

Im looking at a number of amps :

    Teac AG10D
    Yamaha RXV640
    Marantz SR4400

    Im 90% movies 10% sound ( prob mtv / vh1 )

    Speakers

    Im looking at

    Yamaha NSP100
    Tannoy FX5.1

However im contemplating the lower priced Yamahas with the intention to start upgrading them over Christmas ( so I would want good performance in meantime ) ( Id keep the amp)

Searching the threads the Yamaha has been getting good reviews .. ppl seem quiet on the teacs performance and the Marantaz people rave about but thats the 5400 version

    The alternative is

    http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productdetails/index.asp?modelcode=YAM-AV25PACK&clear=

Which is the same speakers i was thinking with the HTR-5630RDS amp but at £265 that seems a little steep

The 6.1 is nice to have and I suppose it gives it a bit of future proofness but Im not massivly concerned about it - Id rather focus on better 5.1 sound :)

Anyway all thoughts greatly appreciated :smashin:

Tha Yam 640 is a good choice for movies. I auditioned one along with a Denon 1804, and both were good sounding amps. I went with the Denon in the end because it had the edge for music.

One advantage that the Denon had over the Ham was the variable crossover levels, which you may want to consider if you're thinking of getting a sub/sat speaker system. The Yam is fixed at 90 Hz crossover, whereas the Denon can be set to 80/100/120/150, depending on your speaker setup.

If I had to choose to keep one of my A/V amps, it'd be the 640. It's poor in stereo, has limited power (especially with 6 channels driven) but just does a fabulous job of throwing noise around the room and putting you right "in the action".

Go for the DSP version if you don't need a radio - its about £40 cheaper. Take a look at the Denons too.

    Slight change of plan :

    Denon avr 1604
    Marantz dr 4400
Pioneer VSX D812 All weighing in at 199

Which doesnt seem to bad ( small room )

The pioneer is slightly marked ( doesnt bother me ) hence the price - Im thinking about taking it but I dont see any rave reviews  so that would leave the marantz which would be good

    Any thoughts ? :D

    you have convinced me :)

Ill save myself the 60 notes and pick up the pioneer :)

BTW taking into account the price differance how does it compare to the 640 ( I loathe to ask that question but I gotta know :) )

Just got it all setup :)

Sounds sweet - Wharfedale speakers £100 jobs from superfi link is above - give out some real nice sound to me Only thing would recommend is stands as ive them on the ground at the moment and the sound seems a bit 'low'

Reciever was the 812 from superfi as i say marked so 1 pence short of 200 but worth every penny imo :)

Oh now i need a all in one remote
