    Hi,

I'm looking for a budget priced sub woofer (about 100 quid) for my surround sound set-up. It needs to be rectangular shape as I'm going to sit it in my television unit (I know it's not ideal, but there is no where else to put it!). Can anyone suggest a decent sub?

    thanks in advance,
    Craiglad.

You need to ensure that it's magnetically shielded if it is going to be close to your TV and most aren't.

Just had a look on the MS website and noticed that the 308W sub is magneticly shielded, so all may not be lost. All I ned to do now is check that it fits in my tv cabinet....

There is no way you can place a subwoofer directly into a cabinet, trust me, it will rattle far too much.

Mine is placed onto concrete slabs which are on top of squash balls the other side of the room from my book cabinet, and the glass doors still rattle in some parts of the room... now imagine placing the sub directly into the cabinet.

It's a wooden cabinet and I'll probably need to blu tack anything that moves. As I say, it's not the best, but it's either in the cabinet or it's not there at all. You should ahve seen the problems I've had convincing her that I need a speaker on top of the tele and one either side of the sofa! the fairer sex just don't seem to understand the need for this sort of thing although i bet she won't complain once she's heard it in action....

The smaller Yamaha subs are rectangular and magnetically shielded.

I am unsure of model numbers and prices though.

There won't be much you can do if each side of the cabinet is vibrating though :p

I tried putting my REL Q200 in my very solidly built wooden TV cabinet (which has no doors and which sits on carpet over a concrete floor) - I blue-tacked it down. That should do the trick I thought - big heavy telly - solid cabinet - nothing should vibrate.

How to test it - ah - the first track off Massive Attack's Mezzanine album played at a reasonable volume......

The sub almost ripped the cabinet apart! Loads of resonance and vibration. Basically, it sounded awful.

    You have been warned.

    Matt.

It sounds like it is out of your budget, but the MJ Aucoustis Pro 100 (around £500) looks just like a posh coffee table- might help get the missus onto your side? Cracking sound too!

Edit: scratch that - the new REL Quake at £350 also looks a bit like furniture.......

Anyone know where you can buy this 308w? Or any similar products by MS?
