I have just bought a Yamaha S540 for the above on strong recommedation over Sony players which I know for sure have issues.
My 900v skips all over some -R, I will try these known discs and let you know, I bought this player because my Panny TV cannot handle RGB from R1 discs via a Pioneer 565, very strange!

    thanks.

My brother owns a Toshiba 220e, which has played every dvd-r he's put in, but this is now a discontinued model.

I bought a low end Pioneer (350S) a couple of years ago and it has played EVERY single -R and +R burn I've thrown at it - and I've tried both expensive and cheapo brand media.
Don't know what the current model number is but I can recommend Pioneer for compatability.
