    hi guys,

I'm trying to up grade from my yammy HTR-5550. Want better sound quality and more dynamics.

Brought the Marantz SR5400 thinking it would do the trick but i'm a little disappoined not much better then the yammy. My wife thinks it sounds worse so it must be really bad.......

    Gonna return it tomorrow.....

so i'm in the market for an amp..... heres my spec

    I have Celestion AVP305 (8ohm Satalite speakers)
Budget around £350 (must be silver)
Preference (Good quality music in 5ch mode)

    Considering....

    Denon 1804 ....

Will this be any better .....
    Any other suggestions out there.......

Might I suggest that you give the Marantz receiver a few weeks to 'Run In'.

It's commonly accepted that receivers have to be given plenty of use when they're bought 'from new' before they begin to sound anything like their best.

The Marantz SR5400 is a very good receiver and amongst the best in its price bracket, and for sound quality (especially with music) should significantly outperform the Denon you mention.

    hi Dimmy,

    Thanks for the advice,

maybe I made it sound worse then it is, it's not that the reciever sounds really bad it's just that i'm missing some detail that was present with my old yammy.......

I know speakers need run-in time but I never realised amps do...

ok I have 2 weeks to test the amp if there's no improvement it'll have to go back.....

I've also noticed from other threads that your definitly a marantz fan.....

in the mean time any other suggestions from anyone else......

    Dennon,Nad,HK etc etc

I think the pioneer VX812 might suit your budget quite nicely. You could also look at something second hand, as that could push the price/performance barrier even higher.

Have a look at the HK AVR505 see if you can get a demo, also the HKAVR2550 or 3550 latter is over budget, these are quality amps akin to the denon but a bit different and well worth a demo mate.

    Marantz SR5400 (for comparison)
    Denon 1804
    Pioneer VSXD812

    HornyDragon
    Is the HK AVR505 \ HK AVR2550
    available in Silver :-

might ask seven oaks to add these to the demo list,
but 4 amps to demo might be talking the p.

    thanks,

A little confused is the AVR505 LE a silver equivalent it just that it's half black. Are they available in all silver.

I guess that applies only to the 2550 & 3550 as the rest will be out of budget.....

Also how would they compare to the Denon and Marantz for music quality....

    Also should I consider NAD

    just seen the

Harman Kardon AVR2550 for £270 in silver.

It's a clearence... And may go soon...

Also is this an old reciever now.. I know it's good for it's time but can it still be compared to the latest models with the latest tech...
    i.e (marantz 5400 Denon 1804)

A few websites say it's discontined and one says it won what hifi receiver of the year award 2003

so i'm thinking of just purchasing without demo... And go on forum advice that HK are brilliant sound quality...

Will it beat Marantz and Denon for sound quality I don't care much about power...

Marantz I think so denon clsoe call. Build quality almost certain to be better than marantz, HK are quality not bells and whistles latsest gadgetry type units. The 505, 507 limited editions are a stop gap for a new range that is out in the US and will be in Europe soon ish £270 is a very good price if the unit is brand new boxed, not an Ex demo unit.

If you are happy with 5channel amp, then yes, NAD and HK are the best in terms of musical quality, definitely one to two levels up from those I mentioned yesterday.

    NAD T742

    http://www.nadelectronics.com/reviews/T742_512_0803.html

355squids at for titanium at http://www.hifi4less.com/NAD_T_742_AV_Receiver.htm

    HK AVR-3550 new unit-397squids at
    http://www.edge-sv.co.uk/offers.phtml?sortby=offerprice&order=desc

I reckon, NAD has the edge in terms of 2-channel music as it is their primary market for decades. I have had a NAD 320 looooong time ago in Sweden, my first amp, so sweet and dynamic, matching a pair of JBL LX55 3-ways, I think, and it was no problems driving them.

Anyway, none of them 2 are a bad choice.

    hi guys,

got a HK2550, at a good price (£270) but sent it back.

Sounded good with a lot of detail but was a little bassy

May not be fair to make a comparison but it beat the following hands down IMO:-

    Marantz SR5400
    Yammy HTR 5550

Went way over budget and got a HK AVP507 sounds
just superb. Detail amazes me each time I switch it on:-

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP GUYS

    Depsi,

Where did you get the HK 507 from ?

Was it the same place as the 2550, if not where was that from ?

Never found out what speakers you were using! I bet that 2550 will be £250 now!
Glad you like the 507, does the missus think it sounds better than the marantz?

    Hi,

I'm using the celestion AVP 305 speakers.
and a Panny DMR- E50 recorder

(this amp is probably an over kill for these speakers but it does bring out the best in them)

Missus can even tell, she wasn't even into all this. But after I started trying various amps and speakers she was forced to hear the differences.

She didn't like the sound of the Marantz, and now she thinks the HK sounds great.

Superb mate keeping everyone happy is the name of the game, Celestions can be a buggger to drive, which might be why you found such a difference.

507 was from a local retailer in North London.

I got it for £470 (but that was a special deal because my bros brought a fair bit of kit from them)

Can get it fro £477 from the link given by wasabi in this thread.
I gave them a ring and they said they would include delivery for that price.
