Hello there.

I am still looking for a 5.1 surround sound system. I am willing to spend £500-£1000. I would prefer small speakers.

Any suggestions?

I currently have a Sony soundbar, and I am fed up with having to lower the volume when an action scene begins, then increase the volume when the characters start talking.

you will have no problems adjusting the volume of the vocals or sub as modern av receivers allow you to adjust each speaker individually and have various sound settings.

how small are you looking at.. small bookshelves or small satellite? what size is the room the speakers are going in? are you wall mounting or stand mounting or shelf mounting? sny size limits? cosmetic/finish preferences? how big a sub can you fit?

just for movies/tv or also for music?

It is just for movies and TV.

In terms of speaker position, I am planning to put the front three on my TV unit, If the back two are tall ones, I will stand them on either side of the couch (which is opposite the TV). If they are small, I will place them on the back of the couch (our couch has flat, wide arms).

As for speaker size, I would prefer ones that are about the size of a small juice bottle. The sub woofer can be bigger, as I'll put that beside the TV unit.

assuming you're buying new. i recommend demoing the canton movie 75 and elac cinema 5.. both available from richer sounds. the Cambridge audio minx are also great but cost more new and not as good value imo if you're comparing sound quality.

the focal sib evo currently on offer at peter tyson are meant to be good might be worth a demo..ive not heard these myself but id be looking at them if i want Atmos in the future.

the original monitor audio mass also have good reviews and worth adding to your demo list..there are the new smsller mass speakers but they're a big price difference as the old award winning ones are reduced if u can find any stock.

as with all speakers best to demo for a rough idea on sound if u can.

Look at the Q Acoustic 3020i speakers - they are well priced and got very good reviews - you could also look at the bigger 3050i floorstanders if you wanted that, but the 3020i’s will probably be enough.

So just saw you are actually looking for much smaller speakers— makes it trickier as you will lose a lot of bass, so I would say get the biggest you can possibly fit - speakers make the biggest difference to sound - much more than the avr you choose

its not tricky. small speakers can still sound great. just set the cross over point higher on the sub.. all the bass can be handled by the sub

I think this is a great shout. I remember hearing the Focal sib cub in an audio T and was very tempted but i went down the Miller Kreisel route instead. There are currently a number of ex demo ones on sevenoaks sound and vision at £599 you will be hard pushed to better that deal. My other option would be SVS prime 5.1 .... they have just gone up recently and may be slightly over budget. These options may be slightly bigger than you are looking for but are small for speakers and i think you would hear the benefits.

The first generation MA Mass satellites if you can get them. They are ideal size and packs a punch and they are going for discounted bargain
Prize. You would want to add a sub either xls 400 or P300 from BK and you will be laughing at under £600-£700 cracking 5.1system

Monitor Audio MASS AV 5.0 Speaker Package - Speaker Packages - AV Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

BK Electronics P12-300SB-DF Light Oak Subwoofer 5060403220950 | eBay

Denon AVR-X2500H Black 7.2 Channel AV Receiver - AV Receivers / Amplifiers - AV Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

X2600H will be introduced May/June so i would wait little longer as the price will drop down to 299£ very soon (keep checking deals daily - Richer Sounds will usually drop the price first)! Of course one could get a package deal now already if buying speakers + receiver same time. Always worth to call and have a chat! For the BK sub there is more finish options usually and if that is too large there is smaller BK XLS200 nearly same price.
