Finally got this today, after waiting two months for it, and wish I hadn't bothered. Just my opinion, of course, but am I missing something? Is it supposed to be one of those "it's so bad it's good" movies? Well, it isn't. Stupid story, unfunny script, stupid characters, and a crap monster! OK, so Bruce Campbell can do a reasonable Elvis impersonation - who can't? I really fail to see any redeeming features of this movie, or any point to it at all. If you're an Elvis fan, you'll hate it, and if you're not an Elvis fan, you probably won't 'get' it. This will be in the bargain bins quicker than Battlefield Earth. I only hope it doesn't get an R2 release, because it doesn't deserve it. Mine is going straight onto eBay. Nuff said. [IMG]

I'd have to disagree with you there I'm afraid!

I loved it, I guess if you're expecting a horror film you would be thinking "what the f?", but I thought it was a great laugh, and even had some nice little touching moments. It is a very strange little film though!

Personally, I thought it was a great little film. Had a lot more heart and soul (sic) than a lot of the "big blockbusters" that have come out lately.
Each to their own, I hated T3, which alot of people thought was great. Go figure.

I knew people would disagree, which is fine. Guess it's just not my type of film. I have a strange sense of humour, and I very rarely find film comedies very funny, especially American ones.

I still haven't figured out quite what it is about, is it:

    a) An action/horror film with the main characters being Elvis and JFK.
    b) An upsetting tale on how age can create confusion, depression and distortion.
    c) An uplifting story where the two main characters use their imagination to bring themselves out of their dull lives.

    I hope it is c.

I think it's a common misconception to view this film, thinking that it's a "comedy", in the studio sense of the word. I loved it personally. It was played straight without deliberate gags, but it's comedy lies in the absurdity of the sceneario. It is a the dictionary defination of a cult film, but not a contrived "cult" product like Kill Bill.

There is no middle ground on this title. It's either loved or loathed. The commentary track by the "King" himself is a worth the price alone.

But one mans meat is another mans poison.

although I really like it it's not something I'd ever recommend to someone on the basis that you really don't know who'll like it and who won't.

Thought BubbaHotep was great. Everyone I've lent it to thought it was brilliant.
My wife was crying because she was laughing so much.

Better put than I could.

That scene near the end with the slow-motion shot of them walking down the hall in their gear is hilarious, and at the same time very moving. That's already one of my favorite film scenes of all time.

I've listened to the first commentary, but not the "King"s yet. Can't wait!

But I agree that this film is "odd", and isn't going to appeal to everyone.

Why buy a film you haven't seen and have no idea of what to expect?
I must confess I'm really confused by people who buy/collect hundreds of DVDs, many that they have never seen, only to sell them at a loss a short time later
We've only got about 20 and we bought them all after seeing the movie first.

BubbaHotep had a very limited run in the states . I'm not sure it was ever released over here theatrically with the exception of a couple of festival screenings.

Anyway when you are as busy as I am you catch up with the ilms you missed on dvd
And sometimes I like to watch films with no preconceptions beyond a mild interest in the subject matter. Massive hype tends to put a film to the back of my must see list : even if it turns out to be terrific.

Main reason I bought BH was laughing my ass off at the trailer.

All part of the enjoyment of DVD collecting. I've found some great films this way, that otherwise I might not have seen. The Butterfly Effect is one of the recent ones which springs to mind, and Secret Window. In fact, I would probably say that a good majority of my DVDs have been bought 'blind'.

    Fair enough.
We don't have that much time to watch DVDs (well I do but the wife doesn't) so we tend to be quite sparing in our purchases.
That will change as soon as we emigrate to Turkey though as we'll have nothing but spare time in which to watch movies.
I expect we'll be going on a bit of a spending spree a few weeks before we're due to leave... :D
