I think they dont want the originals back, they just want proof that you own them, I just scanned the booklet and first film disc, printed the picture off with the letter and posted it on a friday, 3 day later I had the 2 replacements.

The most noticable error is in FTTF part II,
The scene where marty is putting on the clothes from the future.
If when doc brown pulls the cord on his jacket you see the arms of the jacket shrink you have the second version. if you can only see to his elbows you have the first.
or you could just look on the case, there is a little version 1.0 or 1.2 notice somewhere.

edit- just looked at my pack and it doesnt seem to have a version 1.0 as i thought it did. so you will have to look at the movie for the errors

If you have the replacements it will state on the disc itselfs, something like v2 for BTTF 2 and v3 for BTTF 3

I bought the trilogy just before Christmas and have been looking to see if I have the new or old version and I think I can say I have the new version.

Here is a screenshot from mine, BTTF2 at 08.14:

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/shaw99/BTTF2.JPG

then compare it with the screenshot on this page:

    http://www.angelfire.com/film/bttf2/

I can't see any markings on the DVD or casing that would suggest it is version 2 though.

    Looking at my replacement discs now, underneath the DVD/CP/Universal logos on BTTF 2 it says 903 027 9B / R1 and on BTTF 3 it says 903 027 9C / R2

I am assuming the R1 means it is the first replacement and R2 means the second replacement, I would have thought any new releases would also have either R1 or R2 on them.

Yeah you're right, I didn't notice that before, so my new release is the fixed version.

But wasn't there a problem with the replacement disc 3 being dull and then they are replacing them again? - does the second replacement for disc 3 have a different code on it?

The first replacement of BTTF 3 had a dull picture, I expect that said R1 on it but as mine says R2 it must mean second replacement as I see nothing wrong with it.

R1 is the latest (issue 2) & correct final version of BTTF 2.
R2 is the latest (issue 3) & correct final version of BTTF 3.

These apply to Region 2 Discs only.
