I think that the beeb have started their experiment with Bitrates as Bruce Almighty last night was virtually indistinguishable from the SD version showing on BBC1 - IMHO.

    Anyone else concur?:thumbsdow

Most definitely! the picture quality from the beeb has been getting progressively worse as the weeks have gone by. Worse time to play around with the rates IMO what with many people off for xmas, this should be the time the beeb showcase HD at it's best.

The bitrate was pretty consistant (9% for 93minutes) with previous BBC HD broadcasts so you have to consider an SD upscale despite the HD tag in the banner.

It's largely irrelevant anyway considering almost the whole of Xmas day will be taken up with about 20 episodes of Bleak House

You would not have noticed the difference. Worst performance yet by the BBC with supposed HD.

I can only assume it was upscaled. But agree with you all, it was poor

Hi there. Where do you derive bit rate information from? :)

Previous HD recordings off the BBC HD trial as reported by the STB have been around 6/7% for an hour which means 9% for 93minutes is inline with previous efforts. The BBC HD trial is also broadcast at a constant bitrate which removes stat-muxing and content based compression which helps to predict bitrates.

There is also a website provided by Oliver which reports bitrates for SD and HD on the European satellites which is very informative:)

I spent the time watching the film, not just the quality of the broadcast... That was damn poor too!

Already seen the movie so the only reason I wanted to watch it again was for the HD aspect, that was one of the main points of buying into SKY HD:)

Did anyone watch the Santa Clause 2? I just saw the end credits rolling but there was a Buena Vista graphic at the end that was definitely not upscaled. Was the whole film in HD? Please tell me there's some hope for Monsters Inc. and Pirates... being in HD?!!!

    :lease:

I didn't watch it (should still have recorded it though just to have a look) but on another forum it's HD credentials are undisputed so still hope for Monsters and Pirates:)

I watched this and it was a huge improvement over Bruce Almighty and definately in HD.
Big difference between the HD and SD.

But Santa Clause 2 didn't have DD5.1, did it? I certainly wasn't getting 5.1 anyway. What a dire film though. I had to stop watching after 10 minutes.
