    Damn :(

I've got all my HTPC bits in a temp case as I couldnt wait to play with it :D

When watching DVDs through PowerDVD or vids through XPMCE every now and again (randomly) that picture will freeze and the sound will make a BRRRRRRRRRRRR noise for about a second and then it'll all carry on again as normal. Any idea what this might be?

Immediate thought is the soundcard. Common cause for problems is hardware acceleration, certainly in games, not sure about DVD players. Are you decoding in the PC or an external amp?

Next to suspect I think would be the DVD drive, maybe the player is getting errors and retrying .. check the XP System Event Log for anything pointing to problems at the time these events occur.
