broadband speed

    Hi guys

    I've got broadband pn my pc and although my machine is quite well specced up, it soesn't seem to be running as fast as on my mates computer who has the same bandwith on a lesser computer.

    Anyone know how i can test the bandwith ?

    One thing to bare in mind is that your broadband speed is affected by your internal wiring, how you are connected to the local cabinet and also how far you are from the telephone switch. You friend may just be a lot closer than you.

    For example, I'm with BeThere and so have a potential 24 Mb downstream. However I'm rather far from the switch so all I was getting was ~4.5 meg. I played around with my internal network and isolated my broadband connection - as a result I now run at ~7.5-8 meg download - still far short of the potential maximum.

    kitz.co.uk - ADSL Broadband Information is a good site for lots of info - you can put your phone number in, and see how far you are away from the exchange, likely speeds, and which provider

    see attached pic for typical speed vs distance for the various ADSL specs
