Here in the states, Arcam and Musical Fidelity are enjoying brisk sales. But what are the most popular UK made integrateds in the UK? I would be interested to hear some brands that may not be well known in the US.

    Cheers

You are already familiar with two of the better known brands.

Some others with a decent reputation include (but not limited to)

    Roksan
    Creek
    Sugden
    Cyrus

Other will no doubt add to this list!

ATC - not hugely popular, but much appreciated by those in the know (and with deep pockets...) Make top-notch speakers as well.

Meridian is another very well respected UK hifi company, though I think they're known more for their sources (CD players, etc) and digital pre/pros and speakers than power amps.

    Cheers,

I actually owned an Audiolab integrated when I was in college. Great piece for the money. But the Musical Fidelity A300 is the best UK made integrated I have heard so far. The Creek models sound quite nice as well.

If, as I suspect, you are not so very young, then it was probably the AudioLab 8000A, which was what I first bought s/h. The one at the other end of the URL is the AudioLab 8000S, which is far better. I believe that Tag based their prize winning, but expensive, Tag 60iRv on that model.

When the Linn Majik was £450 it was in top three selling integrated amps in UK for severeal months I believe. Even although it was twice the price of everything else in the topten list. It is still an excellent audio integrated amplifier.
(this was in a pollof specialist retailers in one fo the specialist mags, might have been WhatHiFi)

Hey Nelgan I notice your speakers are dual-concentric...how do they square up against the Tannoy and Kef reference ranges...

Are the amps mentioned UK made. The companies may be UK based but are the amps actually made in UK or in the far East along with almost everything else.

Does that actually matter anymore? Surely the designers input is more important than the builders?
Having said that I still prefer to buy British:devil:

I didn't buy my Meridian and ATC kit because it's British, I bought it because it's the best! :)

Though the fact that the kit I found to be the best also happens to be designed and built in Britain is quite nice. :)

    Cheers,

Only when answering a question accurately. In this case the question was "what are the most popular UK made integrateds in the UK?"

One of the answers included Quad which is Far Eastern owned and probably Far Eastern made as well. Their speakers certainly are.

That is an interesting point as when the Dixons Group were looking around for a trade name to stick on their own stuff they decided on Matsui as they thought that an English name wouldn't have enough mass market appeal for consumer electronics.

Quite true Ian, but given that a great deal of so-called British products are neither British designed or British made, the question is valid I feel. For a start ATCs are designed by an Australian (okay so BW has been here quite awhile.)
However, British management still counts for something so I guess we can rule out Quad from that list.

    Daninthemix,

I actually set out to design that line based on my overall disappointment with the Kef and Tannoy models. I believed that starting with better drivers, cabinet construction and crossovers and crossover parts would help to realize the full potential of the dual-concentric design.
Guess what - I was right!

Are you asking about British integrateds so you can test compatibility and so on with your speakers then?

Certainly. As a manufacturer I have to use a wide range of electronics with my speakers. It's not likely that audiophiles purchasing speakers for $1100 USD will be using them in a 15000 USD system as I do. So I have to have a very inexpensive sytem, a mid-level system, and a reference system in order to properly evaluate each model. I'd like to use a high quality British integrated in my midlevel system.

    Cheers!

In that case go for something like an Arcam FMJ - not ultra high end, but reperesentative of the vast majority of good British integrated amps.

I like the sound (no pun intended) of your phillosphy and build principles and would be interested in learning more than is on your site at present.thanks.

    Hello Stranger,

I have in fact sold loudspeakers to consumers in Spain, Ireland and Germany. I will extend our current free ground shipping to residents of the UK as well. So you need only convert the USD price to pounds. If you'd like more information please e-mail me at:
    info@nelgan.com
I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

    Cheers!
