I pre ordered it too, dude. Now my pre order is gone completely. Very annoying.....

Do you have The Longest Day? If so, is it worth owning if getting Bridge Too Far, as well? (I know they are different perspectives.)

    Hey man

YEAH get the Longest Day. Its a great film. As is bridge too far. Both totally different. While longest Day is in b/w and not quite as Gory/Violent its still a Fantastic film. Well worth it.

    cheers

It's been on my mind on my to get it as it is referred to in the notes of Pegasus Bridge by Stephen Ambrose. Quality read. The notes say The Longest Day was very good for showing 3 different perspectives on D.Day. I have looked around on net and so far seen it for full price..... I will keep looking!

When I saw the colourized version on TV I thought it'd be nice to get it on disc if it was available. I thought it looked quite well done. I thought they might have put it in the 2 disc R2 set as a kind of extra feature, but it was not to be. In fact, the 2nd disc in the UK set is a bit of a waste of time, considering what's on it.

Asking if it's worth getting A Bridge Too Far if you've already got The Longest Day is a bit like asking if you should get Tora Tora Tora if you've already got The Battle Of Midway - 2 different films handled 2 different ways about 2 different operations.
A Bridge Too Far totally blew me away when I first saw it when I was a kid, back in the early 80's.

A Bridge Too Far & The Longest Day are classic films worth getting- also Battle of the Bulge is very good. If you like tanks :)

it's just a shame they couldn't find any German ones.

A Bridge Too Far is the reason Sam Peckinpah couldn't get hold of any tanks for a big battle in Cross Of Iron - Dickie Attenborough already had them all booked for his WW2 epic, which left poor old Sam P a bit miffed.

It's a shame that in some films they haven't put more effort into disguising their Russian T55's. They don't look at all like a German WW2 tank, even with a massive swastika on them.

Just ordered the Danish release of the 2 disc set of A Bridge Too Far (same as the UK would-be release but with a different sleeve) for about a tenner (99 Danish Kroner) from www.dvdoo.com in their sale.

    Nice:smashin:

Has a uk release been set yet for the S.E?

I bought and watched The Longest Day. It was the black and white version. What a classic. I had seen it many years ago. I clearly remembered the Richard Burton scences. It was tops to see the very young Sean Connery in it (falling over in the water after making a smart quip) and the excellent John Wayne and Robert Mitcham. Classic and no mistake. The Private Ryan of it's day.

    The 2 disc SE's good.
The transfer looks the same as the old version but the audio sounds a bit better after the 5.1 remix. It's no Saving Private Ryan, but there's better seperation and the mix sounds much more open than on the old 2.0 surround track. It's still front-loaded but the extra bass adds more depth to the audio and brings up the battle scenes much more than before.
Extras wise, there's a decent commentary that features loads of people involved with the film - there's a lot of anecdotes and technical info on making the film, a lot of it seems to be spliced together from interviews but it's still very scene specific. There's also an accompanying trivia subtitle track for more info.
The second disc has a 60 minute retrospective documentary (narrated by Burt Reynolds:cool: ) about making the film and history of the actual operation with interviews with cast/crew aswell as war veterans and documentary footage and clips from the film + behind the scenes. Plenty of discussion on historical accuracy, the logistical nightmares of such a big production aswell as the way the critics savaged on its original release. Another featurette (similar to the talking heads stuff from Band Of Brothers) narrated by James Coburn, where veterans discuss their own memories of the battle, another 15 minute featurette where Richard Attenborough discusses his thoughts on making the film and its after effects, the theatrical trailer, and a short photogallery where you get to see producer Joseph E Levine posing with all the major stars of the film.

Nice. The UK release will be identical to this, so it'll be worth picking up even if you've got the original single disc version.
