This would be great to watch in 4k and you may even get to see the ice cream van on top of the hill during one of the battle scenes which they forgot to edit out!

I understand the UK Fox version doesn't have Dolby Vision, the US Paramount does, but the Fox has slightly more saturated colour.

I only wish I could watch it! My Sony X800 refuses to play the 4K disc. Seems I'm not the only one that has the problem and not only Sony players struggling with it. :(

Thanks for the review, looking forward to picking this up! Great film, even though I’m a history buff the inaccuracies don’t bother me at all - although this may have been because I was only 10 when it came out so wasn’t fussed for that kind of detail?

Quick question regarding the review (and other film reviews), I notice you mention what source and what screen you are watching on for picture quality but no mention of what you are you judging the soundtrack on? Presumably not just the TV when your commenting on the quality of this?

Either way i’m looking forward to hearing the Atmos mix

Thanks Simon - about time (the disc not the review!!!!) and a great review.

On a side note, could I be so cheeky as to make a request of you and your fellow disc reviewers please? There is never any mention of if a film comes with a digital copy or not in the AVF reviews: I know that the review is and should always be about the disc. But having started to build up a digital library to go alongside my disc collection, my buying decisions (UK or US mainly?) are now being swayed by things like if a digital copy is included - case in point is the latest Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom disc. All the cover art at all the big UK retailers showed no mention of a digital copy (the regular BD did, but not the 4K disc), so I imported it from the US at an inflated cost.....only to find the UK version did indeed have a code included once on sale. Even now, the cover art at all major etailers still doesn't show the correct one, meaning short of going to the shop itself, you have no way of knowing if this is included or not.

With this one, I don't think a digital copy is included, so I'll be waiting to import a US one that does include one hopefully in the black Friday sales.

Please could you and the team make a mention in your reviews if one is included under the extra features ? If these tend not to be included with the screeners you guys get, fair play, just thought I'd ask. Apologies for the off topic discussion.

There are two types of people where this movie is concerned. Those that don't care that is the most historically inaccurate film ever made and those that do. There are lots of articles written about this here is one.

20 Things You Learned In Braveheart That Are Totally Inaccurate

I fall into the latter unfortunately. Randall Wallace wrote the screen play based on the poem by Blind Harry rather than actual events and that was written 200 years after Wallace's life. Almost nothing in the movie bears any resemblance whatsoever to real people or events.

Most people don't seem to care. I just couldn't sit through this rubbish again.

Yes, as you guessed, the issue is that PR discs are normally single disc (you have to torture PR companies into giving us even the BD with the extras) and never come with the packaging let alone a digital code, so that means we often don't have all of that information readily to hand when reviewing the disc. For all finished copies we can note it in the extras though.

Thanks Cas - appreciate that. It’s getting more and more difficult to really get a clear handle on what actually is included in the whole package these days ain’t it?!???!?

Thanks again guys and keep up the excellent work! :smashin:

Not noted in the link you gave is Wallace's 'invention' of big spears to defeat the English at the Battle of Stirling (sic). Long spears (pikes) had been around for at least 1500 years by that time and are shown well in Oliver Stone's Alexander. They were a principal weapon of the Scots at the time of the Wars of Scottish Independance.

However despite all the historical failing I still like the movie. Enough so to get the USA UHD version when it first came out. Which has played out well with it having Dolby Vision vs the UK release which doesn't. On a comparison of the USA release viewed in DV vs the same disc viewed in HDR10, DV won out for me.

I don’t mind it’s inaccurate, it’s a great yarn and when the old pipes kick in, it stirs something inside :)
I still listen to the soundtrack a few decades on, some beautiful tracks.

Was another US import for me as I didn’t have the patience to wait.

Thanks for the great review !!

Sorry who said it's an inaccurate film..it's only in accurate if it's being presented as a factual film, and I haven't heard anyone say it's supposed to be accurate. It's a great great movie and in most peoples top 20 must have titles, it's a great great movie, regardless of accuracy imho, one I've loved since release

Hang on, didn't this reviewer just give 2001 an 8 out of 10 (for the film) ……? And this big budget SNP party political broadcast gets a 9?
Well, it portrays a real historical person taking part in real historical events, so....

I both hate it and like it. I can watch it as a piece of entertainment but hate it for know it for some of the historical inaccuracies But I always said Hollywood never let the truth get in the way of making money. I also never forgive Mel Gibson for stirring up anti English feelings in Scotland. I don't know if it was his point as he did try similar with Patriot.
In the Great Escape I believe the only american to escape was one serving in the British Army.
I sometime think they make this if they could get away with it.

I watched this originally in Scotland where I was living at the time. Anti English sentiment was always bubbling under the surface and this movie did what it intended. The SNP did actually use this and Rob Roy I think as propaganda. I loathe this movie to this day and will never watch it again.

Hadnt heard that, I believe I have an X800 coming today with my LG B8 , the US Braveheart disc plays ok in my Samsung 8500 (although huge amounts of random disc /drive noise) so this will be one of the first discs I test

I love the film (even being English, and really don't think there is THAT much anti-English sentiment) for what it is - a great film.

I'll be interested to hear if your US disc plays OK in your new X800 as that might be an option for me. It's the newly released UK 4K disc that won't play in my X800.

Unfortunately some people think it was a documentary and of the mind set it only happened a few days ago rather than 7 centuries ago.

A 10? Well that's... brave. I haven't seen Braveheart for years, but my overriding memories are the awful accents, the ferociously anti-English bias, that it was historically wildly inaccurate, and that it was a generally all rather mediocre.

When film-makers are adapting real life events they need to be very careful not to stray too far from the truth. If they're incapable of being honest, then just adapt a novel instead.

A bit of artistic license is acceptable and normal. This is off the chart. They should have just called the central characters something else and called it a fiction and that would have been OK. As it is it offends me and many others.

None of us were there, so who knows what is accurate and what is not anyway, it's a great 4k Blu-ray end of story...if it offends people you have a choice, don't buy it

My Sony X700 also refuses to play it. All I get is a blank screen, I can open the drawer but the player is then locked. Fortunately it seems to play on my Pan UB900 OK.

The history is quite well known actually. Basically, everything in the film is a fiction. When you read the history, Wallace is a far far less impressive individual than in the film or Blind Harry's poem. He won one battle and lost the next. Then he lead a raiding party. He also went to Rome to petition the Pope. Quite why he captured the imagination the way he has is a mystery to me. Robert the Bruce did far more but had French heritage so perhaps isn't considered a true Scot?

I have both the DVD and upgraded to the Blu Ray. But it's a piece of fiction and to say we don't know what happened you may as well say none of these characters in the film existed. A lot of the inaccuracies are well documented.

FWIW, my x700 refused to play any disc but I sorted it by doing a full factory reset. Basically plugging out and leaving it for a couple of minutes.

Absolutely love this film. One of my top 10 of all time. Might have to try and find a US Import for the DV - where do you guys buy them from and how long do they take to arrive?
