But to the end user, the student, if they don’t go on to earn enough money, it’s still free to them, or am I missing something?

By earning a degree it isn't necessary all about getting employed in a high salary job afterwards. You have to go to university and attain a degree just to get a job today. Most employers are insistant on it, and even those other jobs thst the employer may nor appear to require one it's likely that they will employ the people who have got a degree compared with those wno don't hold one of thoae applying for the same jobs.

I doubt anyone is surprised that Truss can't answer a question. It will be front page news if she ever does know an answer to a question. Another talentless member of this government.

A few rumours floating around twitter that Johnson's had enough is planning to quit in the Spring, to avoid the COVID inquiry and Brexit blowing up in his face. Take with a pinch of salt.

But that is exactly what a coward would do.

Pretty much, he must be planning to flee the country if the COVID inquiry has real teeth to summon people to give evidence under oath (depends on who becomes Tory leader probably on that score).

And no wonder they've shelved social care plans until later in the year...

Well his replacement could not be worse,,,,,,,, well actually,,,

Not sure if the boundless joy of his departure would be marred by the Ugly Bug Ball that would be a resultant leadership contest.
Sunak would probably be my pick from the dearth of talent available, although I'm not sure that the Blue Rinse Brigade in the shires or the White Van Man Sun readership could accept an Asian leader.
If Gove gets the gig then I'm emigrating.

No 10 says no extra money going to NHS to fund 3% pay increase

Here are the main points from the No 10 lobby briefing.

  • Downing Street has said that no extra money will be available to the NHS to fund the 3% pay rise for most staff announced yesterday. A No 10 spokesman said the pay rise would be “funded from within the NHS budget”, but he said this would not impact funding already earmarked for the NHS front line.

So that's the NHS stuffed then, look out for the cutbacks and even longer waiting times.

Or tie-ups with US healthcare companies?

Based on past activity, I wouldn't expect Boris to go until he had appointed those who would staff the COVID Enquiry, and set the scope and limitations of what it could cover, and gave himself a veto over how the Report was written and whether it could be released, and if so, to ensure that no specific date was set for releasing it.

With Brexit, Jacob R M has already suggested it will take 50 years before we can judge whether Brexit is a success, so Boris could go that route - or he could point out that he had at one time made the case for rejecting a hard Brexit.
It's quite common to cover yourself by a bit of self-contradiction.

They won't do anything in regard to social care, other than continue to cut local authority funding (especially in constituencies that didn't elect a Tory).

In several local authorities there almost is no social care now, at least in terms of acute mental health provision. The very limited support that previously existed is being largely eradicated, to be replaced by Central Access Point services - a call centre operated by people with no psychiatric qualification (who are probably being paid minimum wage).

People will suffer intolerably as a consequence. Some will die. This won't concern a government that has regarded disabled people as expendable for the last decade (that's the kindest interpretation I can place on this; there are more disturbing explanations for the government's behaviour).

Don’t disagree with that, but my point was if you don’t earn a certain amount in whatever job you get, you never pay anything back, so you’ve effectively had free university education.

Where are those people that said a Starmer Labour government would be no better than this bunch? The NHS under "New" Labour was well funded, pay was up, waiting lists were down.

Any Labour government is better than this lot.

Tories wreck the NHS, call Labour names and then eventually things swing back around to Labour. Who then have to repair the damage caused to the NHS and other public services by the Tories and the whole cycle starts up again. With the Tories screaming Labour spend too much, which they wouldn't have to, if the Tories didn't wreck everything in sight.

I dread to think how much the Johnson years are going to end up costing us.

Nothing to see here, obviously…

Angela Rayner has gone up a lot in my estimation recently. She's like a terrier that's smelt a rat (and as a former owner of terriers, I know exactly how fierce and determined that is).

I'll be sad to see him go.

I want him to stay and face the music.

Mental health services are in a disgraceful state. Locally, they have raised the threshold for referral from primary care to secondary MH services and a lot of very unwell people are now only getting care from their GPs, and have no specialist MH input.

All my clients are people with MH problems. I'm finding more and more have no psychiatrist or CPN assigned. Some of them are manifestly quite unwell and would have had at least a lead practitioner assigned 3 or 4 years ago.

A couple of weeks ago, a former client had a MH crisis and spent 3 days (the maximum permitted) in a police station under S136. They were eventually admitted to a hospital in Milton Keynes, it was the nearest hospital to Sussex that had a bed free.

You're quite correct, @Nick74, some will die. We'll just have to hope that none of them harm other people. (This may sound like scaremongering, but I know of at least 2 cases where someone has committed an act of violence so that they are readmitted to hospital).

Any one of the spaffers on the same bench and the ones behind him will be equally bad.

Tories serve their masters, not the public.
The decent ones were either kicked out of the party of chose to stand down (the likes of Dominic Grieve, Ken Clarke etc)

My daughter is in a management position. She ALWAYS looks at experience and 'work ethic' before a degree/qualifications. Admittedly the positions she hires don't always require a degree but .......... work ethic comes before everything as far as she's concerned.

That in turn demonises mental health issues in the eyes of some members of the public, I can't help but cynically wonder whether some of the conservative party would quite like to return to the ''good old'' days where we simply locked MH sufferers up and forgot about them.

Indeed. I imagine that if someone like Rory Stewart had won the leadership contest, we wouldn't be in this mess. It's dreadful that the One Nation lot are out and the new lot came in on a test of frothing Brexity-ness and loyalty to Johnson.
