Honestly guys, I need your help with this one - I'd really appreciate it if you could help me choose a pair of replacement speakers for my bedroom system.

I got a bit over-enthusiastic with the Tag test disc last weekend and the woofers in my 601's have stopped working  . They weren't a great match for the room anyway - they're very bassy speakers and needed more space to "breath".

With this in mind, they speakers have to be front ported or sealed box/infinite baffle. They must be happy right up against the wall. I'd prefer warmth to neutrality/detail, as the Rotels can be ever so slightly bright/harsh at the top-end.

Max budget is RRP £450, but I'd like to spend substantially less, if possible. Here are some I've been considering. Any I've left out?

    Kef Q1
    Monitor Audio Bronze 2
    Wharfdale Diamond 9.1
    Epos M5
    Focal-JM Labs Chorus 705/706s
    Ruark Epilogue 2 / Etude
    Tannoy Sensys DC1
    AE Aegis Evo 1
    Dynaudio 42

Please check my sig for system details.

The M5 is lovely but rear ported, otherwise it would have been my immeadiate choice. The Diamonds were sounding good at Manchester and the MA's are good if a little bland. Have a look at the NHT SB1 as well, Infinite baffle and fabulously involving.

Cheers Tons, your opinion is always welcome. I'll check out those NHT's.

Surprised you didn't mention the 902's!!

Good call Dfour, I'll certainly consider them. They're competing against stong competition at that price point though - B&W 601 S3 and Kef Q1 are £50 less. Not too sure about the styling.

the b2's go much lower than the 9.1's - whether that matters depends on what sort of music you listen I guess!

I am sure that dynamic turtle will appreciate you recommending something that you have ordered yourself based purely on the recommendation of others but haven't even heard yet as they haven't been delivered.

Thanks for the heads-up with that one, Ian :smashin:

I'll move things along a little. B&W told me replacement woofers for my 601's will cost £52 each!! I've narrowed my selection down to the following:

    Kef Q1
    Focal-JM Labs Chorus 705/706s
    Tannoy Sensys DC1
    Dynaudio Audience 42

Having difficulty finding the Focals ex-dem, reviews are thin on the ground too. The Dynaudios are also hard to find ex-dem/used. I am leaning towards the Tannoys but they are expensive.

I have 2 pairs of Dynaudio 42 speakers (one mint boxed pair for sale!). I've used them right up against a wall, despite them being rear ported, with no problem whatsoever in. They're surprisingly uncritical of placement (as with the Contours which I'm now using). Wonderful little speakers.

Thanks for the pictures, Keiron (saw your add on audiophile candy I think). They are in excellent condition but I am worried about the whole bass issue. The 601's I was using were front ported & bunged, but were still boomy. The fact the wall is one of those plasterboard internal jobs doesn't help either :( . The room acoustics suck.

I would recommend the Quad L series, although they are rear ported, my 21L's are very close to the wall and do not seem to be affected too much, if anything, it adds to the dynamics a little.

The 12L's or 21L's would be a great buy.

Problem is, the 11L's have a reputation for being very transparent and unforgiving - something I'd like to avoid given that I'm using a dvdp for cd playback (until I can afford a decent dac!!), and slightly bright amplification.

    Beautiful speakers though.

Not to everyone's tastes but I think the Blueroon Minipods are absolutely fantastic speakers and were available on a power buy last time I looked. Can't really understand why they're not more popular - maybe the "Friends" connection or the styling? Anyhow they're very good imo.

Yup, they are quite unforgiving, the source has to be very good to make the most of them, hence the need for me to upgrade my CD player now :) upgraditis, dontcha just love it LOL!
