A box that boom's? As opposed to giving clear, distortion free bass?

A boom box is a pretend subwoofer that is not really a subwoofer. But is only a woofer disguised as a subwoofer.

Tuned to give a narrow peaked response (probably) well above 30 Hz. Which excites the boundary modes of smaller room into uncontrollable one note bass. It booms away ignoring tunes and LFE as if they didn't even exist! :zonked:

Since the chosen frequency peak is in the clearly audible region. At first the boombox gives the impression of having lots of bass. Unfortuately the illusion is short lived and the owner quickly tires of the monotonous sound the false subwoofer produces. :(

Unfortunately (for all of us) quality subwoofers require a certain amount of careful design, high quality specialised subwoofer components and a decent box (or tube) enclosure to produce an extended low frequency range. Something that actually plays nice tunes and loud film effects down to very low frequencies always costs rather a lot of money.

It may be you have an unfortunate room mode that emphasises a particular audible frequency. A "peak" in the room's own response to your subwoofer. Due to a standing wave between room boundaries. Try moving your sub if you can. Or you may simply have the sub set too high in comparison with your speakers. Calibrate with an SPL meter.

But it's still not an accurate use of the term "boom box".

BTW: You have a slight fault in your funny signature.

    God's. Not Gods. Sorry. :D

What qualifies as a boom box? Surely anything with REL written on it?

Any poorly placed or setup subwoofer will boom irrespective of who makes it

I've had several REL's from the original Q Bass to a brace of Storms and can assure you that whatever faults REL's have, they are not boom boxes.
