    My current setup consists of:
    soundblaster live 5.1 computer soundcard
    Marantz pm4200
    Wharfedale Diamond 7.1 speakers

The treble currently has a harsh edge which ruins many vocals and so i want to replace the speakers as i am pretty sure they are at fault. I want ones that wont have any harshness in the higher frequencies and will have a deeper bass.

I have discarded any Mission speakers at this stage as i have heard Marantz and Mission will just accentuate the problem - is this true?

Models i have been considering are:

    Wharfedale 8.1
    Kef Cresta 2
    Tannoy R1

    Thanks for any advice.

    :)

The Wharfedale Diamond Series are all front ported so they tend to work rather well on bookshelves/close to walls. With that I'll recommend the Diamond 8.1 speakers.

I'd be more inclined to look at replacing your soundcard first - the SBLive! 5.1 has a pretty abrasive high end. Couple that with the HF artifacts caused by poor 44.1=>48kHz upsampling in the driver and you've likely got the main contributer to your problem.

Thanks for the info, i will try my system with a friends sony 530 cd player and see if it improves things.

Are there any high-end soundcards that would be suitable that arent really expensive?

The M-Audio Revolution 7.1 and Creative Audigy 2 are both well under £100 and offer considerably better analogue output quality than the Live, more so in the case of the former.
