Thinking about buying an I-pod for my CD collection etc. But also to get talking books from the library and put them on to listen to on holiday. Is this a feasible, and if I had say 10 hrs of tunes and 12hrs of books whould the 4gb model be big enough?

It depends what bit rate you rip the cd's. If you rip to mp3 at a Bit Rate of 64kbps (which should be good enough for most audio books), 1hr of audio equates to about 23.5mb's. 1Gb = 1024mb.Music cd's I wouldn't rip any lower than 128kbps, as you'll lose a lot on the qualitity front. So yes ! :)
Remember that the 4Gb model will be less than 4Gb. (software and 1Gb=1024mb)

As Didds has said youll be fine you should actually get quite a few on there and in my experience dont rip any lower then 32kbps as the audio quality suffers quite a bit. All my audiobooks are ripped between 32 - 64 and play fine.

Start itunes - Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Importing

    All your setting are there.
