Saw it last night and totally agree with your review Kumari. Malek was outstanding. 7/10 for me.

Seems it's not the 'biopic of the year' I was hoping for but instead like Ali for the music industry, in that style may have been favoured over substance and backed by a great lead performance.

I'll still watch it for the soundtrack though. Love Queen.

I've fond memories of my Dad listening to Queen when I was a child and it rubbed off on me too. Hopefully we can see this together. Very much looking forward to it.

Thanks for the review. Personally, I was pleased with the level of character study for Mercury and I think that the filmmakers (and Malek - take a bow) do well to paint a portrait of a flamboyant yet deeply vulnerable individual. They didn't have much to go on but memories and perhaps the songs and lyrics that Mercury left behind. Where the film strains for me is rushing through the band's early years and I never felt convinced of the underlying family themes.

The Live Aid sequence gave me literal chills and am jealous of anyone being able to watch this in all its IMAX 1.90:1 glory. The timing of that sequence (given what Mercury was going through at the time), provides a poignant spin to Queen's lyrics. The direction of that concert, from the aerial shots of the crowd to the tracking of Freddie's piano-playing, is just sensational.

Malek was unreal. I had Radio Gaga full blast in the car on the way home. Nearly fired up the AV system and Sub at 10pm and cranked it up..

yeah, fully agree with the Live Aid "footage" - the CGI was utterly convincing and the direction equally awesome.

There's a shot that starts off as a virtual helicopter view and swoops down across the heads of the crowd towards the stage and ends up among the band. I almost stood and applauded that shot alone!

Regardless of what might have been missing from the story, regardless of the fact that some of the songs were wrongly-placed on the timeline and regardless of the fact that John Deacon clearly DID NOT come up with the bass-line for Another One Bites The Dust .... it's still a great film.

It's all about the music, after all. It always was with Queen, wasn't it?

Only 7/10 - I was hoping for more than that. But it's been a week of disappointment for me.

I am going down to London tomorrow with my wife for the weekend. On Friday night to the Royal Albert Hall, to see the legend John Williams conducting a selection of his film scores with the London Symphony Orchestra, followed by the BFI iMax the next day to see Bohemian Rhapsody, which looked sensational.

Well, yesterday I found out that 'Johnny' arrived in London on Monday, and was taken ill, and is in hospital (fortunately it's apparently not a serious issue) and so he won't be there, and a substitute conductor has stepped in. It won't be the same, and aged 86 I doubt there will be another opportunity to see him live. (Get well soon John !)

Now the second part of the trip is apparently only a 7/10.

Ah well, I'm still going to drink too much and have a fun time.....

You must be picky with what you choose to watch if has to be over a 7 to go. :D
Personally inignore reviews before I see a film and only tend to read them after I've seen it to see if it agrees with me.
In this case, it does

Just back from the Imax. For somebody who is old enough to have seen Queen with Freddie 3 times I was not disappointed in any way.Not sure I really wanted to see a warts and all movie. It all about the performances and they are all awesome, but malek is the star, thought he was incredible. The live performances where also incredible, especially Live Aid, had goosebumps all the way through. The best praise I can give it is that I forgot Malek wasn't Freddie./9/10 for me and going again tomorrow.

On another note @Phil Hinton regarding editorial consistency, how can both Solo and Bohemian Rhapsody both be a 7/10?

If Solo is 7 this should be a 9.5 or more likely if this is a 7, Solo should be a 4/10.

Thanks for your nice little review and it's great that you were lucky enough to see Queen three times! I'm tempted to go in for a second viewing as well.

Can I just ask how much of the film was shot in IMAX 1.90:1? Is it just the Live Aid scene or is more included? Many thanks.

This guy helped with the new tracks that had to be done for the film.

From an interview - Graham King (Producer) speaking to 'Rolling Stone'. Quote from ultimate classic rock Freddie Mercury’s Voice Used in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Movie

Freddie Mercury’s Voice Used in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’
Producer Graham King revealed that the vocals used on the Queen songs on the soundtrack were a combination of Mercury's and new tracks recorded by a Canadian singer named Marc Martel. “Literally, you could close your eyes and it’s Freddie,” King told 'Rolling Stone.' “And that’s a very tough thing to do.”

I read some reviews before going to see this, and I was a little sceptical that it might not be that good. In hindsight, the reviews were saying that it isn't a great film but had moments and performances to recommend it.

However whilst not quite all of the movie I would like it to have been, I came away smiling. Really enjoyed it and those sitting on the fence, you certainly wont waste any time or money going to see this at the cinema, especially for the soundtrack as the cinema can play nice and loud.

Overall I thought to myself that the film shouldn't be seen as a movie in the traditional sense but more of a loving tribute to both the band and Freddie.

It came across to me as entertainment, which as is mentioned in the film, what Queen were about.

I will be watching this again at some point in the future, when I can turn it up. It's a shame Freddie passed, would be hilarious to see all four of them doing a tour now, still reckon they would be full on value for money.

Last of all, I still remember how gob smacked I was the day after live aid, as Queen simply came out and knocked the crowd for six, I also vaguely remember thinking how good the performance was when I was watching it, but more so the day after as I said.

So, go watch it, but if the cinema price is too much, go for it when it comes to streaming, you will enjoy it for what it is, GREAT FUN

I’m booked to see the film on Sunday, looking forward to it, have always enjoyed Queens music & Malek looks like he’s absolutely nailed it.

Saw it on IMAX last night and loved it.

Malek was brilliant and certainly seemed made for the role. The guy that played May was also very good.

Definitely one of the better musical movies I have seen

That is disappointing. It will still be a sensational experience though. I went to see the Halle in Manchester last month doing an all Star Wars concert, it was awesome. Obviously mostly John Williams, although I have to say that the Michael Giacchino piece they played from Rogue One was fantastic too. You can't beat hearing John Williams scores played live by a full orchestra.

You are not wrong, I've just got back to my hotel and the London Symphony Orchestra were just sensational. I must admit to one or two 'unmanly moments' during the concert, particularly with the theme to Schindler's List - that solo violin broke my heart.

Strangely enough my 12 year old Daughter became obsessed with both Freddy and Queen a matter of weeks ago.

Just came back from a viewing- thoroughly enjoyed the film. Not perfect but still a fantastic film. Agree about the Live Aid ‘Helicopter’ swooping down which was mentioned earlier. Gave me chills.

Fantastic film really enjoyed it, some poignant moments. Freddie was eerily uncanny so to Brian.

The press and their reviewers will have a good old snipe and get out their well sharpened claws with the chronology of the film and artistic licence used but they never got Queen and certainly not Freddie. Maybe I could with the omitting of the Sheffiled brothers sage and such like But just watched a packed auditorium watch a Bohemian Rhapsody to it's very end credit. Blow it out your ****.

Got to say I was really impressed with the film. Very much enjoyed and I thought all the main actors caught the essence of the people they were playing. Yes, there was definitely some artistic licence but given the Brian May and Roger Taylor were, I believe, very closely involevd in the whole thing then I think it lends a greater authenticity to the film. As mentioned above, it's not so much a biopic as a reflection of the key moments told with fondness and a touhc of pathos. For me, probably an 8 / 8.5 film and a fabulous sound track.

I’ve been listening to Queen a lot since I saw it Thursday.

My two (nearly) three year old twins are starting to love some of the songs. Albeit off if the greatest hits albums. .
