I did enjoy Bohemian Rhapsody but I felt that it was very much a sanitised version of events. The rest of the band are little more than supporting characters and I personally felt the film would have benefitted from a bit more of them. I think I would have preferred a bit more debauchery. A good movie elevated by Maleks performance.

Yeah, there's much it missed as more of a Freddie Mercury biopic rather than a Queen one - Brian May building the guitar he's always used as a young teen with his dad, from a hundred-year-old mantelpiece etc. There are some great stories there. I also think the actor playing May was perfect, dare I say it better than Malek in terms of capturing the character. A very good film but certainly a skim over the surface rather than a deep dig, only so much you can do in a couple of hours though.

One thing I didn't particularly like (as mentioned in the review) - the film kind of made out that Freddie returned to the band because he found he was HIV positive and wanted back in before it was too late, when in reality he didn't know for a couple of years after Live Aid.

      Oh!

Jokes aside I see what you are saying however I think it strikes a wonderful balance. My son is 8 1/2 and loves Queen's music. I feel like we can watch this together.

i absolutely loved this, i think it showed very well how lonely freddie was off stage and how some people around him were leeches. this film is about the music. his sexuality was covered briefly but what else do we need to know?, his decadence was covered briefly, but we understood that he had this dark side, so people saying they want that explored more would be a completely different film..this is a celebration of queens music and freddie's showmanship, which it showed perfectly. a 10 all day long for me.

@Simon Crust did the included BD also have an Atmos soundtrack?

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think so, I think it is Dolby HD 7.1.

I must say, I'm really looking forward to testing this out on my system.

That's a fair point. Both my kids like Queen too and I would be happy to let them watch if I could get them off bloody Youtube!

A star is born had the Atmos soundtrack on the BD. Maybe it is only Disney that are cheapskates with BD. I think @Steve Withers might have some knowledge on this.

A Star is Born is a Warners release and that studio puts Dolby Atmos tracks on both Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays. Bohemian Rhapsody is a Fox release (hence the HDR10+) and that studio only puts Atmos tracks on 4K Blu-rays. The regular Blu-ray is 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

I think you have to be in the mood for it and hopefully not too influenced by the hype and heightened expectations.

I must say I enjoyed it. Didn't really feel it was a documentary. It's a story of a geeky guy becoming a legend. And struggling with it.

A feel good movie in the end with a triumphant climax.

Sounds like a plan! But hey, if it's not for you, it's not for you.

Just goes to show how difficult it is to make a movie. You're always going to lose some people. The art is to minimise those losses.

Gotta say this film really surprised me at the cinema - I had no expectations but it was very good for what it was.

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this film

I do enjoy Queen music so of course that helps massively as does the superb 4k image and terrific sound which was pumped loud through my speakers ;)

I thought the performances of Malek and the supporting cast were all excellent and the story made the film very entertaining.

I would certainly nudge it a 9 overall it was great and a superb 4k release.

As a big Queen fan growing up I enjoyed this, but like others I was annoyed at some of the fabrications and timeline inconsistencies. While Malek was excellent and the star of this, the actor who played Brian May was uncannily good - at times I had to check it wasn't actually Brian May !!

Also, Mike Myers was funny in his role and loved the irony of his line about teenagers headbanging in a car to Bohemian Rhapsody! The Live Aid recreation was also very well done.

      Thanks for the review

Having read the poor reviews I went in not expecting much, but it didn't even reach that (low) standard. Nothing to recommend it apart from the music - bland direction from Bryan Singer, a poor screenplay that could have been written by a 5 year old, wooden acting from everyone except Malik, and dodgy visual effects at Live Aid (the camera seemed to concentrate on the same dozen extras in the crowd - could they not have afforded a few more?)

I do love to listen to a bit of Queen but wasn't that fussed about watching and got persuaded by the missus. I'm glad I did now, I really enjoyed it. I know very little of the history of Queen so have to say I'm really not fussed on the accuracy or not, I liked it and will probably get the 4K to watch again.

Spot on. I think it helps if you like Queen but arent a big fan. That explains why its been so successful. And it appeals to all ages too unlike many films.

Am I the only geek on here that spotted the (AV related) blunder?
In the (Mike Myers character)'s office, they play a demo vinyl on a Garrard 401 turntable with an SME arm, and one character turns the volume down at the end.
Fine, except it's not a volume control on the deck, it's the fine speed adjust control.
      Pfft :)

      I'll get me coat.

Definitely going to pick this up. I was a little disheartened by some of the glaring inaccuracies, but we must remember Roger and Brian were consulted throughout the production of this feature. I certainly picked up some of the events seemingly shifting in time, and why they didn't play Death On Two Legs, not sure. It cemented the feeling of the whole band at the time.

Still, it was a great performance. Can't wait to hear the extended Live Aid set at home. :)

The whole family loved it when we saw it in the IMAX on my birthday.
      Really wanted to sing along
      So
Went to the sing along and loved it again.
Just watched it again and loved it again
Like seeing Queen live which I feel lucky to have done it is just pure entertainment.
Really had the HT rocking when the concert parts were playing, I guess the levels were set to 11.

Snap, just watched it loved it and will watch it again.
Watched the 'extras' Live Aid set straight after but was a bit surprised that they didn't just have the Live Aid set without the cut scenes, would have topped it off nicely IMO.
      Loved the atmos soundtrack.
