I recently brought a BMW 5 series. 55 plate. The car has a on board screen for heating and car computer info however there is nothing there on there in regards to the sat nav. I did not get a CD either and didnt remember to ask at the time as it was a private sale. Could i now buy the dvd and install it or will the screen not accomadate sat nav? Thanks in advance

Are you saying you have sat nav installed in your car?
If so you need to find out which version of the nav computer is in your boot. Depending on the year it will be cd or dvd based. DVD based systems were used on the mk4, and if you have a 55 plate it probably is mk4, using dvd as the car is probably an E60.
I have a 2005 330Ci which has the dvd based and I was given the 2008 disc when I bought the car last year but the original BMW discs are expensive at £85, but there are other places you can get them from.

You need to be clear about what you have. If you do not have the sat nav screen installed like mine in the picture then you will obviously not have the antenna which is normally in the boot.
The complete sat nav installation is the dash screen, on board computer, tv digi box, and dvd drive in the boot.
It is factory installed as an option. If you don't have anything installed, how would you expect sat nav software to be of any use?

The disc you want is called 2009/1 High Mapping Navigation dvd, which is the one I am using in my car above. My car uses the Mk4 Navigation computer which I believe is also used in your X5.
You also need to upgrade your software to V32 which, with the correct disc gives you full 7 digit post code entry, 3d perspective view and locations of speed cameras. If you would like to know where to get this from pm me and I will pass on the details.

If you contacy this guy Mick, ([email protected]), he will send you the software upgrade and the disc and complete instructions.
The warranty work should not make any difference and it is very unlikely that the dealership will do the upgrade or even know what it is!
As above, I would also urge you to have a look around and join the forum BMWLand. It is a UK based forum and you will find it indespensable for all sorts of things.

    Hi Sonny,

I have the BMW professional sat nav system (i drive & DVD based) on my 120d. I currently have the 2005-1 DVD, would I be able to use the software upgrade & 2009-1 DVD?

I would like to have the speed camera POIs.

    Thanks
    Haider

Yes, I am fairly sure the sat/nav of the 120d is similar to my own therefore you should be able to use the 2009/1 disc and this does have speed cameras that can be selected as poi's. Contact the guy I have mentioned above for details.

Hello, TivoUK. Now your case I am not sure as the X6 is very new. In fact it is so new that surely you would have been given the latest disc/software. Also, does the X6 actually use a dvd based system or is it hard drive based?

TivoUK, if your system uses disc then, again you need to contact the guy I mentioned above quoting your car and ask if his disc is compatible with the X6.

Is the disc genuine or a copy?
If it is a 2003 E46 you should have a Mk4 nav drive/computer but they are very sensitive to disc types etc.
The update (currently V32) improves functionality but the disc should still work without the update.
It may also be a simple case using a lens cleaner. Try it.

hi,can anyone help me with this. i have just bought a 51 y reg bmw x5 with built in sat nav. it came with no disc. i purchased a disc and it got stuck. i now know the mk3 unit in the back is faulty. i spoke to someone who repairs them and he said while costly, they dont compare to the up to date portable ones eg tom tom. i have a an rac portable sat nav i use in another vehicle that i could use in our x5. but i would rather use the already built in screen. so is it possible to connect our screen, tv moniter which is fine, through a portable sat nav that i could store in car somewhere. then we would have a more up to date gps to use without seeing two screens
