US, January 7, 2008 - Now, your Blu-ray library can follow you wherever you go. According to an article from PC World, Sony demonstrated the ability to insert a Blu-ray movie into a PS3 and then transfer a copy of that movie to a PSP or a Memory Stick at its booth at CES. Highlighted as the next level of disc copying, this was merely one part of the new "BD Live" functionality, which will include the ability to download ring tones and new content to BD Live players.

According to David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, "This way, you can have a portable copy you can take with you. There was always the promise of greater interactivity. You'll see that coming in the new year."

We tried to contact SCEA, but they were unavailable for comment at the time of publication of this article. While there was no estimated time that consumers would see this new function, it could make 2008 a very entertaining year for PSP and PS3 users, and further strengthen Blu-ray in the format war.

I like this idea. Certainly makes Blu-Ray movies better VFM. I wonder if it's possible to add to movies that have already been released

It also makes the PSP an absolutely fantastic PMP. Ripping from a DVD vs ripping from BR?
As long as its implemented well of course.

Really increases value for money for buying a film. Buy it on BR, watch it at home, go on holiday and take it with you on PSP.

It'd be brilliant if true! I doubt I'd use the feature very often but I'd love to have the option. I wonder (and doubt) whether this would also be available for DVD movies we played on our PS3s..

Well you can already rip DVDs to a format you can play on a PSP.

True, but I can see the appeal of plugging a device into your PS3, sticking in a bluray/DVD and having it convert a film across. Simplicity. Also removes the hassle for people who can't be bother trawling the net for video conversion programs and using a PC to convert.

It'll probably have DRM on it, but if you own the source BR, this shouldn't be a problem... otherwise copies of films will start popping all over the shop and all you need to do to increase your collection of movies is to hit the rental stores!

I would also welcome this additional function. Although both Sd DVD and BR's can already be ripped having the ease of doing it on the PS3 might be handy.. Although unless they allow 'tweekability' of the process to enable differing quality v's size copies, we may find ourselves having to go out and buy a lot more Sony memory cards... fancy that! At least with ripping using a PC you can decide what you'd rather do..

AFAIK, this is also only Sony movies, not the other studios and I certainly doubt it'll ever be the kings of paranoia that are FOX. So again personal rip on the PC will still have an advantage.

Good news, and a welcome addition, but again are sony missing the point with the PS3, what I want as a gamer is better games and more of them. What I want as a BR owner is a standalone player

think its a great idea if its a quick process.. will probably go and invest in a psp if its done well.. love the idea of being able to pop in a blue ray and convert to psp.. all the messing you have to do on the PC is pain, ripping the dvd, then using something like pspvideo9 etc.. just to much hassle.. and if you can get the movie wirelessly to the psp even better...

I did rip a DVD but then when I found UMDs were going for 3 for £10 I bought a few. Still haven't bothered watching them yet though.

It's a nice idea but generally if I'm stuck away from home and I want some films I usually take a portable DVD player and some DVDs or I have my laptop with me anyway. It's why I've never bothered with an Archos. Maybe it will suit some people though.

My thinking too. They keep adding to the functionality of the PS3 and taking it further away from a console and more towards a 'home everything' system. Great in some ways but at present Play magazine gives less than ten games a 90% or better rating. Of those three of them are driving games. (Motorstorm, Dirt, Sega Rally). It would be nice if they remembered the first sylable of Playstation was 'Play'.

Eugh, Sega rally is terrible I think in comparison to dirt. How did that get over 90%?

I think the PS3 is starting to find its feet with the games now. Remember, the PS2 had what... Fantavision as its only good game for about a year? Oh and ZOE which got over 90% thanks to having an MGS2 demo on it. I think be grateful for the goodies we got so far, and look forward to the gaming year ahead. MGS4 next month etc.

I really like the fact that they are pushing for a total entertainments device. I like the fact I can bung on my mp3s and have a nice visualisation going for it, streaming media from the PC or now using (the slightly flawed) DivX implementation. I can quickly switch from listening to tracks to bunging on Warhawk with no fuss. Hopefully the HD TV addon will be great too.

its all a preference thing. Some people don't like convergence. We're not quite there yet, but its getting better. Can't wait until my phone holds all my mp3's, has a slide out qwerty and nice screen for the net while taking excellent quality photos. Means just the one thing thunking around my pocket.

With portable devices such as phones etc, convergence makes sense, that's why camera phones with MP3 players etc are so popular!! But IMO with home cinema kit Divergence is what I want

At the moment the problem is AV fans and Gamers with a slight interest in movies are all being lumped together so no one is truely happy, normally we would all be catered for with different products.. Thats why I have a DVD player and a Xbox 360!

OT! But as for MGS4 I do hope it's better than Snake Eater!!!

but the ps3 is a darn good Blue Ray player.. for my money probably the best bet in terms of performance (disc loading times etc) and future proofing..

i would say in our house its usage is 20% games, 20% music, 60% dvd/blue ray watching

true, and if I could buy a machine that did everything I wanted for 1/4 of the price of 4 different machines I would.... unfotunately simply playing something isn't doing everything I want, doing it to the best of what I can afford is what I want. Sure If I still lived with my parents had less cash and a single room to squash everything in a PS3 would make sense, just as I had a PS2 as my first DVD player. Fortunately I now have the benefit of having the space for seperates and even several systems and enjoy them far more than just one box.. IMO once we have better choice of BR standalones many like myself will be selling on the PS3, and if there is no war to spur on BR buying and better games avaliable, I wonder how popular a BR device the PS3 will be, although that was the plan I guess.

Anyhow sorry to go OT.

indeed but for some the ps3 is a pretty good solution if you want a High Definition movie player, a playback device for your digital music collection, dvd player and has the power to be a top gaming machine. Ok the games may not be there yet, but i doubt you'll get many saying it doesnt have the potential for great games.

If Sony had to release the ps3 without a blue ray drive i probably wouldnt have bought one.

My first dvd player was a ps2 also. Back in the day, standalone dvd players were rated much higher so i rather quickly bought a standalone dvd player as my main dvd player..

i dont see the same need with the ps3, its produces top quality dvd playback and blue ray playback so i cant see myself replacing it with a standalone machine any time soon and if the likes of Paramount and Universal start releasing on Blue Ray i can sell my HD DVD player.

Anyway getting off topic.. Sony must be rubbing their hands though.. they look to have a pretty much winning position with Blue Ray now.. they must have major dollar signs popping up before them

With it being Sony who have gone out of their way more than pretty much any other company to prevent you from enjoying your content as you wish I'm extreamly dubious about how this will be implemented.

However doing this sort of thing and doing it well could easily turn around their reputation from being one of the least consumer friendly companies to one of the most.

If its put in a blu-ray to your PS3, plug in say a 2GB USB drive, wait 20 mins and you have a copy of the movie that can be viewed on your PC, on your PSP or on any other portable movie device then it would be fantastic and would completely turn around my opinion of Sony. If it only works on the PSP though its crap and so I'm extreamly dubious but would love to be wrong.

If we buy a movie on optical disk we should have the right to view it on any device we own, to take it to work to watch on the train, for the kids to view in the car, or to stream around the house on a media server. Any company who makes us criminals to enjoy the content we have paid for simply encourages piracy and not prevents it as is their intent.

We are starting to see DRM disapearing from mp3 sites, if Sony were about to lead the charge to do the same for Movies my respect for them would go through the roof, pandering to fox with BD+ in blu-ray though suggests to me they are far away from that.

this to me is an obvious solution that I have been expecting for ages. It would make even more sense if the next PSP dropped the "UMD" drive,and had a large amount of solid state memory - used to store games, movies etc download either via PS3 or PC.

Sony's Playtv (or whatever the freeview turner is called) will allow you to record digital tv, and also play back via the PSP.

If Sony can pull this off, so it works and is not too restrictive, then it would be a good thing.

Big fan of MGS and one of the reasons I got a PS3 (just not admitted that yet) it's actually the only exclusive game I'm lookign forward too! But yes, lying in a tree trunk changing my underware didn't do it for me!

Also after the first hour of playing I'd only actually 'played' for about 10 minutes IIRC !! (I did time it at the time!) Thats just plain daft!! And what do they do? They give him a BR disc to fill with FMV.. Wish they'd give him a MGS movie then perhaps we could get on with the game play!!

But from the video's I've seen and reports etc I've read, MGS4 does look like it'll be a return to form, have to wait and see

It does mention in the IGN article that you can put it on memory stick.

I can see them putting in an expiry date to these files to stop people who hire and rip, buy/rip/return or sell on etc, and to stop people passing files around to all their mates, I don't think we'll ever get around that. Of course those who wish to bypass that will no doubt rip using secondary software like we have been so far to date.

If they don't do the above, they are effectively giving loads of people the ability to produce nice high quality rips of films which will no doubt appear on Mr Friendly Torrent Site.

This would be a good idea being able to watch HD movies on your psp though I cant see how the PSP will have the power or memory storage to to do this in a high def format.

PSP screen Res is 480x272 iirc so far from high def resoloution and 8GB is the max memory card available from scan computers, how many films could we watch on that?

Another limiting factor would be the streaming capability, with only an 802.11b wireless connection it wouldnt be able to stream a movie.

This is brilliant Marketing/PR by Sony, I bet there is a portable BLu Ray player released soon with a HD screen Res or a Portable player that can play of memory stick.

You dont jus tPLAY games though.......if anything the games are 2ndry to most uses of the PS3 (simply because there arent that many games out yet)

I really hope it works for all BR's - I would love to see it, would be great for a long plane ride (with added batteries) think its a great move
