Is blueray PQ any good from a PS3 or should I go for a dedicated blueray player, not really a gamer but enjoy the odd driving game.If a dedicated player is recommended which one for around £250/£300.

The PS3 is a good player but can be noisy

For a standalone you don't need to pay that much now, the sony 350 and the panny BD35 are both good

The PS3 has been the reference player on a lot of review sites for a long time , mostly because it loads so fast and has such a good picture and DVD upscaler.
It has also been profile 2.0 for many months , something only the latest blu ray standalones have at the moment.
It is still the fastest blu ray loader by a long shot.

How noisy it is depends on where you want to put it , I had mine standing vertically for a long time and noise was never an issue , now I have a new Hi-fi cabinet and ever since I put it in that its been noisy as hell , not enough cooling you see !!

Even more unfortunately the BD35 ( freebie with my panasonic plasma ) is in the same boat , its really quiet when outside the cabinet , and whines like a bottle of wasps inside it. The BD35 has a tiny fan on the back which goes crazy if the unit gets too hot.

So for now , the units are sitting on top of the cabinet. Where they are both very quiet.
So thats something to consider whatever way you go.

    Hi ohhnoo. :)
Yes very good  you either want the PS3 (extra features etc) or you don't really,S350 or BD35 are the most popular choices on the forum.
    All the best.

Mine is completely silent, you wouldn't even know it was on, even if you were standing right next to it, unless you saw the lights were on.

I've done a little research and the later series CECHM have the 65nm RSX chip which apparently means the PS3 will be running cooler and hopefully quieter.

I believe that this applies to all of the 40GB and 80GB PS3s. Mine is certainly quiet.
As it happens, I've compared mine PS3 vs a BD35 during the last week. Some might disagree, but I couldn't see any difference in BD performance, although I felt that the BD35 had the edge on SD-DVD.
So the question is whether you want to spend the extra to get the extra functionality of the PS3, but to result in slightly worse SD-DVD performance. For me, I'll be sticking with the PS3, which gives me:
    - Fallout3 and Grand Turismo5, both ace games
    - The ability to add a PlayTV and use it as a PVR
    - Streaming capability from my PC for JPEGs and videos

I find that with all PS3's , if they have plenty of cooling space they are all quiet , put them in a confined space , and they are all noisy , regardless of the model.
Fan speed and consequently noise , will change as the internal temperature of the PS3 changes.

If you want to play games, and dont have a 360 get a PS3, if not, I think a blu-ray player is fast becoming a better decision than it was a few months ago for the same price

I have been using my ps3 as a blu ray player and I have to say I have been very happy with it. Just the thought of newer standalone players offering better performance is making me think about making the jump.:smashin:

I never thought the PS3 was worth it for BD only considering it is over £100 more than some BD players such as the Sammy 1500 and almost £100 for the Sony S350. Picture quality won't be any better. Plus, there is no remote without charging more money for one. I also don't like the idea of using Blutooth either. Having compared a S350 with the PS3, it isn't that much faster.

    I'd rather save my money.

Agreed Kingfats - my brother-in-law has a PS3 and I have a Sony 350. Not much in it in my eyes. However, my 350 is multi-region for DVDs and his PS3 is not. This may be a factor.

Also remember the PS3 is good for playing lots of other formats, hi-def wmv, m2ts etc etc :) Mine is also silent....but I'd recommend buying the proper remote control as it makes it so easy to use!

The PS3 gets regular updates and as a player it benefits greatly from that support.

However, if ultimately picture and sound quality are your concern then there are better. The Sony 350 or the BD35 are good budget machines particularly the Panasonic which performs outside its station.

For a little over £300 you can get yourself a Pioneer BD51 which is the best of the bunch at the moment and beats the PS3 on all counts of quality.

having just got a sony s350 im very impressed with it , and thats on a 32" screen , to me however there is hardly any difference in PQ from a ps3 to the s350.

one big difference i have noticed is the sound is much better on the s350:)

The downside is operational performance. May not be a consideration for some but I find using the LX91 frustrating at times in terms of Blu-ray movies load times etc.

PS3 can't output audio over HMDI and optical at the same time, which might be annoying depending on setup/spouse, and the PS3 can't re-encode audio for max bit rate DTS optical transmission like the Samsung DBP1500/2500 can. I returned a PS3 but have kept my BDP2500.

Depends if the need for speed is more preferable to video quality.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a player simply because it loads a few seconds faster.

That really depends on the setup as far as Blu-ray film is concerned. :)

Mines noisy wherever I put it but then its a launch day console so I can believe they have improved.

This reminds me of one other thing you may want to consider, the remote.

The noise from my PS3 doesn't bother me because it is situated in a different room from my projector. This is ok as the PS3 uses blutooth for its controllers but if you use a universal remote like a harmony for your other equipment this won't work with the PS3 which might be one point in favour of the standalones
