There has never been any doubt that this is what would happen: it's just JVC got there first. Both the Panasonic E700 and the Sony BDZS77 (the two BluRay recorders currently available) can already record DVD-RAM/DVD-RW and DVD-R as well as play all DVD-Videos/CDs. Both of these have been dual laser machines (a blue laser for BluRay read/write and a red laser for DVDs/CDs) but Sony, Panasonic and others have been all working on so-called tri-wavelength heads - and all have working prototypes.

There is no doubt that BluRay (or HD-DVD) will simply be added to existing DVD burners. The trick is going to be adding BluRay and HD-DVD to the same (slimline) drive.

At least it's better than the dual DVD/HD DVD discs proposed by Toshiba which is bad for DVD and HD DVD! I would prefer to just have dual layer Blu-ray discs become standard, rather than these combo discs which limit the HD to 25GB.
