blu ray to digital or optical input

Hi
I want to connect my blue ray to surround sound 5.1 wc receiver which does not have hdmi input. Can I connect it via either optical or digital output from my blu ray to the optical or digital input on the av receiver with the appropriate cable to get 5.1 surround sound. If so which would be best?

Optical and coaxial digital carry exactly the same signal - use whichever you have spare. It won't be HD audio - but it will carry DD/DTS5.1 surround sound.
