Well whilst I liked the movie - thought the acting, cinematography and editing was all great - I just don't quite understand all the love its receiving as the story was nothing I hadn't seen countless times before and there was nothing remarkable about the writing.

Bit then every so often films come out that other people love and I just either don't 'get' or just think 'meh it was ok'.

This is one of those - enjoyed it but didn't think it was anything special.

Thanks Cas! Saw this some time ago and didn't know what to expect at first, but as you say, it's a real gem of a film.
I noticed that you didn't expand on the plot, and appreciate that it would be difficult to do that without giving the game away.
Don't understand the comment from midknight about the "seen countless times before", as the plot slowly unfolds it's full of things you certainly weren't going to expect, and I can't think of a film that had a story like that previously.
It was good to see Chris Pine in what was arguably his best role outside of Kirk. Ben Foster as his murderous brother was excellent, and once again Jeff Bridges brought the whole thing together as the ageing gritty sherrif.
The film has been described as a modern day masterpiece in some circles and I'd probably go along with that. The comparisons to No Country for Old Men are very fair. I actually thought this was a better film though. I'd have given it a 9. ;)
A great watch, and certainly not to be missed.

Ta for the review - especially as you didn't say too much about the film! Definitely adding to my rental list with a buy to follow if it impresses - hope it does.

This is a great film, probably my best of 2016. Ben Foster is just fantastic in it.

Will be with me tomorrow from Lovefilm rental on bluray, really looking forward to it after reading your review Cas:smashin:

If it is as good as expected I wonder if it's coming to UHD as I would probably buy it.

I'm puzzled as to how a movie rated 8/10 with an overall 8/10 score for the Blu-Ray is given an "Unmissable" award?

Clearly I did it just to add an extra layer of confusion to your day.

Although I'm not personally that perturbed by it. I thought the film was great but really struggled between an 8 and a 9. That doesn't stop it being unmissable. Even imperfect films can be unmissable. Otherwise it'd only be 'perfect' 10s and we'd have never got to use the magic 'unmissable' badge across the whole of 2016!! :rotfl:

How'd you get on with it?

I think a UHD would have been nice but I can't see them doing one anytime soon, it's too niche for Studios to care about its worth. Not enough CG. Shame really. Actually come to think of, I wonder whether any of the UHDs thus far released are devoid of CG. If not it's an irony really, as the 2K DI is what appears to be most people's hang up, justified or not.

I really liked it, not the best movie ever but a really easy casual watch which is refreshing amidst all the action filled dumbed-down blockbusters.

Watched this today, great movie, 7-8 out of 10 is about right to me.

The star of the movie for me though was the waitress who served Jeff Bridges and his partner their steaks, frightened the crap out of me. :D

An unmissable film doesn't have to have a 9 or 10 rating.

Example, Withnail and I. Very highly rated/unmissable amongst its fans but less than 8/10 on INDB. I think it's total bobbins, but its a film you kinda got to watch just to see.

Just finished watching it. Good solid film very well acted and directed. PQ was excellent apart from a little juddering at the very beginning. Sound again was really good, I could even understand Jeff Bridges. I'll give it an 8/10.

I do like Jeff Bridges, makes me want to dig out True Grit again.

Unmissable? Unwatchable more like with the mumbling actors. Particularly the brother robbers. Gave up after 15 mins.

Watched it on Saturday and really enjoyed it. I would have passed it by if it wasn't for this review, glad I didn't.
Great soundtrack too, as has already been mentioned.

Whilst I enjoyed this film, for me it sits comfortably in a category of disc I like to call "SO Glad I Didn't Watch This With The Wife".

It's handsomely made and well acted but maybe not immediately accessible to everyone.

For me: A modern take on Bonnie and Clyde, subtle and nuanced, proud not to be just another action thriller, featuring heartfelt performances all round.

For her: Can't understand a bloody word they're saying load of depressing pretentious twaddle that thinks it's clever because nobody is completely right or wrong and everyone is varying degrees of damaged and depressed.

      I know my audience :)
