Action film the first to use an 11.1 surround sound mix at home

DTS announced that the 20th of November Blu-ray release of The Expendables 2 will be the first disc to feature a DTS Neo:X optimized soundtrack. This multi-channel mix will allow viewers to hear the movie in 11.1-channel surround sound, assuming you have sufficient speakers and amplification! Home cinema systems equipped with Neo:X processing can take full advantage of the mix and the release will enable consumers to experience a truly multi-dimensional sound stage. DTS Neo:X will put viewers in the center of the movie's action scenes, allowing them to hear every detail of the soundtrack from all angles, including the action overhead.

In a statement, Miguel Casillas, SVP of Lionsgate Home Entertainment Production, said the company was “thrilled to be able to offer a first of its kind listening experience to the Blu-ray format.” He added that “hardcore audiophiles and casual fans alike will be amazed at the dynamic and immersive experience of DTS Neo:X 11.1 audio.*It's the ultimate audio playback environment for the home theatre enthusiast and a perfect match for the incredible audio design of The Expendables 2."

Molly Kronberg, VP Digital Media for DTS Inc., said "DTS' advanced surround sound solutions have been a benchmark standard for the highest quality audio on Blu-ray discs since the format was first introduced; we believe that the adoption of Neo:X on Blu-ray discs and high end AVRs builds upon DTS' success in delivering an immersive cinematic audio experience to consumers at home.” She also said that "studios and AVR manufacturers alike are showing increased interest in our advanced Neo:X processing and we are excited that the action-packed thriller, The Expendables 2, is the first major title to take advantage of the technology's stimulating multi-dimensional aural capabilities, which dramatically complement the movie's high-impact action scenes."

The Expendables 2 is the first Blu-ray disc to feature a DTS Neo:X optimized surround sound mix capable of delivering an 11.1 cinematic audio experience at home, and is also the first Blu-ray disc to feature a customized Neo:X 11.1 sound check featuring audio from the movie soundtrack, which can be accessed in the disc's main menu. Neo:X is fully backwards compatible with 7.1, 5.1 and even stereo playback. DTS is currently in discussions with major studios and independent filmmakers to release additional titles with Neo:X optimized soundtracks to capitalize on this groundbreaking technology. DTS also continues to work with CE manufacturers to deploy Neo:X processing on their AV receiver systems.

The AV receivers that are currently available in the market with DTS Neo:X processing, benefit from dedicated height and/or width speakers that provide distinct direction for sound. The height speaker configuration adds a vertical dimension for overhead sounds, while the width speakers provide smooth and seamless tracking of front-to-side sound for the most realistic audio experience. DTS Neo:X is the world's first 2.0/5.1/6.1/7.1-to- 9.1/11.1 conversion technology within a single algorithm and allows consumers to enjoy movies, music and games as they were originally intended to be heard.

The key features of DTS Neo:X are:
  • Home audio receivers equipped with DTS Neo:X offer consumers an unprecedented multi-dimensional audio experience by optimizing 5.1 or 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks for a full 11.1 experience. DTS Neo:X technology enabled on films, such as The Expendables 2, delivers a high intensity audio experience that truly elevates the 3D home entertainment experience to a new level.
  • Front-height speakers deliver discrete effects to the vertical dimension, elevating ambient sounds (e.g., special effects, room reverberation, wind, thunder, background music, etc.) to a third dimensional space for more depth and realism from the soundtrack.
  • Width speakers expand the sound stage image and provide smooth and seamless tracking of front-to-side action (e.g., the sound from an automobile passing through from the front to the left side of the screen and vertically as the action moves up the screen.)

I'm not usually like this and I may be shot down in flames but.....Big deal, what a load of cobblers we might as well go 20.1, 50.1, 80.2. :lease: When will it end, and the film got trashed by the critics too. :boring: Most AV aficianado's are happy with 5.1 except for snobs like me with, ahem 7.1.

Actually you don't need a very large room to put 11 channels in, mine is 15m^2!!!
Of course it is designed for one person (max 2, if you sit right next to each other) but the sound is incredible… (you just have to be very precise with speaker placement!)
The Problem as you so elegantly put it is 'the other half'! Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy new year…! :)

Well… I would! Trust me, if you can override the WAF Factor, it is worth it! It is the first time I can actually feel I am inside a dome of sound! :) For movies it is excellent for music I choose a more pure root most of the times…
Try to find a well set-up room with Audyssey DSX using 11 channels at the same time (plus the subs) and let your ears be the judge… You may like it ;-)
Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy new year! :)

Trust me when I say that the four extra channels (in the front) brought a much bigger enhancement in surround sound on my set-up. I used to have a 7.1 system for years and I can honestly say that when you do it right the 11ch set-up is revolutionary, even on movies encoded for 5.1 end even on a small room!
Try it and I think you will love it! (can't say the same thing for your other half thought! ;-)
Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy new year to everyone! :)
