Here is a list of known Profile 1.1, or Final Standard Profile, or Bonus View compatible players.

The key to the table is as follows:

    • Reg - Available in US (A), UK (B) or both. N/A means not available anywhere yet.
    • Upg? - Will a profile 2.0 upgrade be available for this player
    • Storage - Does the player allow extra card or USB based storage?
    • On board decoding - What new formats can be decoded by the player
    • HDMI - Whether HD audio bitstream is available and no. of HDMI PCM channels
    • HDMI Mixed - What format will the player output dual stream audio in?
    • Analogue Outs - No. of analogue outputs on player
    • Legacy Digital - Does the player have optical and/or coax?
    • Remaster - Can the player re-master or encode sound over legacy digital DD or DTS?
    • BD-R/RE - Will the player read home-made BD's for camcorders etc?
    • DVD-A/SACD - Does the player support either or both formats?
    • 24p - Will the player output 1080p at 24 frames per second?

See here for a further explanation of Blu-ray profiles.

This list of players may well grow. If a profile 1.0 player (see here) does NOT appear in this list, there is no available firmware upgrade that will make it 1.1 compliant at this time. So base your buying decisions accordingly.

Not all the players listed are yet available to buy.

    Denon Profile 1.1 Players

Not much information at Denon UK's site, but a bit of a 'teaser' from Denon USA. From the 2500 user manual, it appears that the units do not support PAL SD DVD playback for those interested in importing.

    Denon DVD2500BT

This player is a digital transport only with just an HDMI output, that's it. It would appear that it also has no on-board HD audio decoding but will bitstream to an appropriate amplifier.

    Spec Sheet (from USA).
    User Manual (from USA).

For profile 1.1 audio, when audio mixing is enabled, all sound is output only as PCM over HDMI. In this case, when listening to HD audio tracks, the unit will only decode either the standard Dolby Digital or DTS tracks to generate the primary audio, mix that with the secondary audio, and then output as multi-channel PCM. This mixed PCM output is NOT HD audio as the unit has no HD audio decoders on board. When Profile 1.1 audio is turned off, you can get HD audio bitstream over HDMI. Please see pages 11 and 22 of the user guide for more detail.

    Denon DVD3800BD

This is a full BD player with on-board decoding for all HD audio including DTS-HD Master Audio and a full set of outputs in addition to HDMI.

    Spec Sheet (from USA).
    User Manual (from Canada).

Denon USA have confirmed the following details for the 3800. It will use dual-differential Burr Brown 1796 DACs per channel (as per the 3930) and also uses the same DSP unit as their 4308 receiver to perform HD audio decoding.

    Panasonic Profile 1.1 Players

    Panasonic DMP-BD30

The DMP-BD30 is the first profile 1.1 player released. It only supports however minimum BD audio decoding on board. so if you want to enjoy features such as PiP in full HD audio whilst watching the film, unless the disc has an uncompressed PCM soundtrack you will be unfortunately out of luck. It does sport an HDMI 1.3 port and the ability to output HD audio bitstreams including the elusive DTS-HD Master audio, however in bitstream mode, audio for PiP etc. will not work.

Further information on this player (and other Panasonic players) can be found here.

    Latest firmware update link.

This players UK release looks to be very soon as it is now on the Panasonic UK website. See here. (30th Jan 2008)

    Sony Profile 1.1 Players

    Sony Sapphire 3 & 4

So far there are no official details for the two players likely to come from Sony. They were shown at CES and labelled as Sapphire 3 & 4, but that seems to be about all the detail available...

    Sony PS3 (All variants)

Functionality wise, the PS3 is currently about as good as it gets for a Blu-ray player. Sony have recently released a firmware upgrade that makes the PS3 Profile 1.1 compatible. You must install this for new Profile 1.1 features to work, otherwise the PS3 is still only Profile 1.0 compliant. Sony also announced at CES 2008 their intention to provide a firmware update to enable BD-Live compliance on the PS3. So, it remains the most future-proof Blu-ray player on the market today. (As of Jan '08)

The downsides for some are that it's a games console and therefore is not entirely silent, and also if you need analogue outputs then it's rather limited with only 2 available.

*It is however, the only player to date that supports SACD, although that functionality is limited to the earlier 60GB models only.

It does not yet support internal decoding of any DTS-HD audio, this is rumoured to be coming in the first half of 2008, and also does not yet allow bitstream audio output. Rumours are rife about whether either will be provided or whether the HDMI 1.3 chip used in the PS3 (custom made for Sony by Silicon Image) is capable of bitstream output. Time will tell.

    Pioneer Profile 1.1 Players

    Pioneer BDP-05FD

This is the new USA Pioneer player so is more likely to appear in the UK under a name such as BDP-LX??. However, given that what appears here looks very close to what the USA gets, here is information available so far.

Unlike previous Pioneer players you will see that these do not carry an ethernet port. That pretty comprehensively rules out any upgrade to BD-Live.

Pioneer USA have confirmed though that the player will internally decode ALL the HD audio formats. (Finally!)

    OK...

Bit hard to verify many of the details here as to date, there are ONLY 2 players available... The PS3 and the Panasonic. However, if you find any concrete details on any of the above or profile 1.1 players I've missed then let me know...

No profile 2.0 players please, Panasonic DMP-BD50 for example, will have another table for that even rarer breed :D

It would be good to know if there are any performance differences i.e. load times, playback problems etc between the 1.1 and 1.0 players. Especially with BD-J heavy or titles that contain 1.1 features.

Maybe owners could provide feedback against a set of target titles ? Operational performance is a key buying criteria for me so this yould be really useful to have some objective feedback.

    Hi Avi,

Would 100% agree, although it's going to be difficult here atm with so few players available...

I would be happy though to add such details to player notes. Also we need to find a disc that most people have that is a suitable benchmark.

    Suggestions welcome.

Is anyone able to confirm what the PS3 will send over optical digital out when watching a profile 1.1 film with PiP enabled? Does it recode everything to DD or DTS? Does it give you a choice? Any help here much appreciated :smashin:

Why is the LG BH-200 not included in this list? It's a profile 1.1 player with the April firmware and does decode internally plus it has an excellent QDEO video processor with user accessible controls. In addition to this, the player can play back any BD disc when set to another region using the remote. SD region free is possible too.
