I have just upgraded to a 1080p Projector and was formerly using my PS3 for Blu-Ray playback.

Does anyone know if I will see any improvement with either a Sony or Panasonic Blu-Ray Standalone player?

    2 players im considering are:

    PANASONIC DMP-BD10AEGK
    SONY BDPS1ES

Any comparison of these would be helpful as they are almost the same price.

I cannot comment, as I don’t own any of the machines you list. :suicide:

However I have read that both the Panasonic and Sony offer a very small improvement over the PS3 which may be visible on your projected screen.

Obviously I cannot vouch for what I have read else where.

The PS3 however is currently the most flexible of the Blu-ray players available. It certainly is the most capable in terms of loading BD discs that have java interactivity features. It may also be up-gradable to higher BD profiles.

What you may gain in picture quality you may lose in terms of functionality and convenience.

There are several new BD players on the horizon, it may be safer to wait for them to be released and read a few reviews.

And don’t forget that your PS3 can do 1080p/24…

All I can say is that the PS3 can produce a superb picture.

My projector is 'only' 720p, but the level of detail is better than my local cinema, and as good as I've ever seen at any cinema (within the bounds of memory).

    Yeah picture sure is good,

I find my HD-DVD EX1 has a slight edge on picture on my PS3, but the PS3 seems to blow the EX1 out of the water on sound, but really be interested in anyone running a standalone Blu-Ray who also has a PS3 to see any difference.

I appreciate differences in film qualities/set up etc, so anyone who has both a standalone blu-ray and SOny PS3 please put me out of my misery.

I imported the US versions of both the Sony BDP-S1 and PS3 last December (the latter for my nephew) and when they arrived, I compaired the two closely. I thought the stand alone player had the edge (just) in terms of sound and picture quality, but was oh so slow compaired to the PS3. Things have impoved a bit after 4 firmware updates, but it is still not what you'd call slick. The UK player, whcih has a different (CD capable) drive, may be better however.

My sister had an early UK Panasonic player (sorry can't remember the model) but has since changed it for the latest Pioneer (more money than sense).

To be honest, if you have the PS3, I'd suggest you wait for the newer Profile 1.1 players to come out, which are likely to be cheaper anyway.
