Hi, I have a Samsung 55" 4k tv with Denon AVRX2400, sky q and ps4... I would like to buy a blu-ray player that is capable playing cds for music, but am worried about buying something that will soon be out of date. I like the Denon blu-ray player but it doesnt play ultra HD discs. Should I future proof by buying something that can play Ultra HD or would a quality blu-ray player like the Denon be good enough for many years based on my AVR and TV?

    Thanks

As your Samsung TV doesn't do Dolby Vision and may not do HDR10+ there is no point in buying a player which does (the UB820 suggestion above). You can thus go for a cheaper player which doesn't have those versions of HDR. The Sony X-800 UHD player is a cheap price currently (£280-£290, reduced from £400) for its build quality and may be your biggest bang for the buck if you want to keep your options open for HDR10 UHD playback.

Good shout sir, I didn’t read the original post. With a tv that does 4k and only handle hdr10 only (to check as Samsung just started rolling out hdr10+ on 2017 models and still working on 2016 models), the x800 is a top choice indeed. It is also built very well and that’s important for movie and music. The X700 is slightly cheaper but not as well built.

If your tv is 2016 and especially 2017, back to the pana that does hdr10+ :)

The Panasonic UB420 (expected to be cheaper than it's UB820 big brother) would be a good choice if just HDR10+ and not DV was wanted.

Personally, if I wanted to future proof, I wouldn't consider something like a Denon blu-ray player as it's getting very long in the tooth now and I'm not sure if Denon is keeping on top of the firmware updates needed for playback compatability with newer blu-rays. A newer player which is still getting updates could thus be a better choice.
